No Jihadist Is A "Single Perpetrator"

There is a palpable relief in the media that the Fort Hood shooting is "not an act of terrorism" and the murderer "not a terrorist". Yes, maybe -- just maybe -- Islam had something to do with it, mainly in that the man was "mobbed because of his faith", but whatever, it is an "isolated case", the deed of an "individual acting on his own", a "lone perpetrator".

I specifically liked the reaction of American Muslims:

The news that the suspect is one of their own brings up familiar feelings.

Well yes. I wonder why that is so.

Besides fears of retribution, they're tired of sensing pressure to apologize for someone else's 'maniacal brutality.'

So it was just the individual action of somebody with whom they have nothing to do, besides, terms like responsibility or shame (in the way we understand it in the West) are not known to be near or dear to a Muslim's heart. Apart from fearing (baselessly) for their sorry asses, they can't be bothered.

While it is funny (more peculiar than haha) to hear Muslims talk about individuality, they are, in a way, right. Indeed, bringing Islam forward ("jihad") is the only way that allows for individuality for a Muslim, although killing infidels is still the method of choice for that.

When will people BEGIN to understand that jihad IS terrorism.

And now do me a favour and try the same searches with the term "baruch goldstein" instead of "fort hood".

Why Fort Hood Happened NOW

A lot has been said about the Fort Hood shooting. Islam is to blame, immigration is to blame, liberalism is to blame. All that is right, or at least not wrong. But why did it happen NOW? After all, 9/11 happened 8 years ago and there was little Muslim violence against America since then - on home soil, that is. But there is one aspect that wasn't discussed at all, and if, I've overlooked it.

In the course of an email-discussion about American suicidal idiocy that allows Muslims in the military, Gudrun Eussner writes (and I translate):

During WWII, the Americans interned even perfectly loyal Japanese and Germans because of their ancestry. I recently saw a feature about German-Americans who are still fighting for their only too belated rehabilitation.

At 11:25 AM, the President addresses the House Democratic Caucus – Cannon House Office Building.

At 2:30 PM, the President makes a statement to the press in which he warned the American public against "jumping to conclusions" over the motives of the shooter. Also, he elaborated on health care – Rose Garden.

At 2:45 PM, the President leaves the White House en route to Camp David where he is supposed to play golf – South Lawn.

God help the US of A. Their President who has -- somewhat stumbling -- sworn to do so won't. Notabene that it was political scientist Dr. Gudrun Eussner as well who identified the botched oath as something of greater and more far-reaching consequences, something which Americans, even "conservative" Americans, are either not willing or not able (or both) to concede.

The Man Who Puts Obama To Shame

Question: Is "post-racialism" possible?
Answer: It is ... if you are not black or a Muslim.

The 36-year old Philipp Rösler will be taking office as Federal Minister of Health in the second Cabinet of Angela Merkel. (The picture above shows him at the swearing-in ceremony as Minister for Economics and Deputy Prime Minister of the federal state of Lower Saxony on February 18, 2009.) I will let you know later what makes the German Federal Minister of Health so topical today.

Rösler was born in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam, and came to Germany at the age of nine months as the adopted son of a couple that already had two biological daughters. He grew up in Hamburg and Lower Saxony. After training to become a combat medic in the Bundeswehr, Rösler was exempted to study medicine at the Hannover Medical School. Following this, he continued his education at the Bundeswehr hospital in Hamburg. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2002, and left the military as a Stabsarzt, which equals the rank of an army captain, in 2003.

He is Catholic, which is decisively not the norm in strictly Protestant Lower Saxony, and a member of the General Conference of the Central Committee of German Catholics.

Rösler has been a member of the market-liberal FDP since 1992. He was secretary of the FDP in the state of Lower Saxony from 2000 until 2004. In May 2005 he was elected an observer of the federal FDP executive committee. At the state party conference in March 2006, Rösler was elected chairman of the Lower Saxony FDP. In April 2008, he was confirmed in the office, receiving 95% of the votes.

In July 2007, he was elected to stand as his party’s main candidate in the Lower Saxony state election to be held in January 2008. On 18 February 2009, Rösler was appointed minister for economy, labour and transport as well as deputy prime minister of the state of Lower Saxony.

Now it was declared that he would succeed the painfully inept "Ulla" Schmidt as Federal Minister of Health in Angela Merkel's second Cabinet.

Rösler is married to Wiebke and since Oktober 28, 2008 they are the parents of the dizygotic twins Grietje Marie und Gesche Helene."One looks rather East Frisian, like my wife, the other one resembles me", he told the glossy BUNTE.

Today, the trial of a man accused of killing an Egyptian woman in a German courtroom (we reported) opened in Dresden. Security is tight, about 200 police officers secure the court, the area is barred for traffic, the residents were asked to remove their cars from the streets and the accused sat behind bulletproof glass. Many attendants were wearing badges with the victim's face. "This trial is seen as having a higher than usual security risk," a police spokesman said and nobody laughed.

"He stabbed them out of pure hatred against non-Europeans and Muslims. He wanted to annihilate them," prosecutor Frank Heinrich told the court and nobody mentioned all the many peaceful Muslims for whom the security measures had to be taken because they want to annihilate US and have gone a long way towards that goal a darn sight more effectively already than the yob from Russia in the German courtroom in July in reverse.

Will it be enough? You must be joking!

January 31, 1997 the 42-year old Vietnamese Phan Van Toau's skull is broken by a German who smashes him on the concrete floor at Fredersdorf (Brandenburg) railway station. Three months later Phan dies in a clinic. The prosecutor at Frankfurt (Oder) opens the case against him on the grounds of xenophobia. During the trial, the perpetrator spouts racist slogans like "Fijis out of Germany". Still, the court does not follow the prosecutor and sees "no xenophobic motive" behind the deed. The defendant gets a sentence of nine and an half year for manslaughter.

In August 2008 a Vietnamese illegal cigarette dealer is stabbed to death by a German who wanted to play cops and robbers in Berlin-Marzahn. Witnesses confirm that the man had announced his deed and that he wanted "those Fijis" to go away. The head of the homicide squad saw no "hints that would suggest a racist crime". Accusations of manslaughter were dropped and the perpetrator confined to a mental institution.

It took me two minutes to find those cases through a Google search including the German search terms for "murder" and "Vietnamese". And neither in those two nor in any other of the other cases I found was a courthouse turned into a fort, no full-bodied declarations of "pure hatred against non-Europeans and Vietnamese" or "annihilation" were made, nobody wore badges with the dead men's faces and no politician went to the funerals carrying a white (or any) rose. In a word: nobody gave a damn.

Did the Vietnamese riot in the face of such REAL German coldheartedness, of such TRULY blatantly unjust sentences? Did they accuse the Germans collectively (if at all) of racism and hatred? Did they make demands? You must be joking! Instead, they went on with their clothes shops, their illegal cigarette dealings, their fruit and vegetable stalls, in a word, with their lifes*, just as Dr. Philipp Rösler did neither turn into an angry advocate for South Asians nor did he ever make his race an issue at all. He does not think that his success is justly deserved for past injustices of whites towards the non-white races, he does not speak for minorities, the disgruntled, the bitter, the jealous and the power-hungry, he does not offer himself as a redemption from the original sin of being white. He is just the right man for the job.

* This rather flip statement is supported by a 2007 study of the Ministry for Foreign Aid ("Economic Cooperation" as it is now politically correctly called). Most Vietnamese people, in West Germany more so than in the East, are well integrated. What is specifically interesting is that it was noted that they do little networking. They rather try to assimilate and to get on in life individually, based on their own merits.

In this context, the case of the rabbi who was stabbed by a friendly young man with a migration background in Frankfurt in September 2007 (we reported) deserves to be hauled from the blog bilges as well:

The 22-year-old admitted to stabbing the rabbi, prosecutors said in a statement. The man is being investigated on suspicion of attempted manslaughter and aggravated battery.

According to the rabbi, the assailant said "I’ll kill you, you Scheiß-Jude." [Expletives are hardly translatable -- Scheiß=shit, Jude=Jew].

Prosecutors said that the suspect -- whose name they did not release -- denies having either, any intention of killing the rabbi or any antisemitic motive.

Of course not. Nobody who rams a 7 1/2-centimetre blade into somebody's abdomen has intention of killing the recipient of this attention. That is true. As true as the suspect's statement that he felt threatened by and physically inferior to the middle-aged, obese rabbi and so reached for his knife. As true as he picked by mere chance a man to attack who was, by his outfit, easily identifiable as Jew. As Henryk M. Broder put it: "Here we have another case of self-defense, where the provocateur leaps aggressively into the provocatee's knife as an answer to a friendly "salam aleikum".

Jews didn't riot either in the face of such REAL German coldheartedness, of such TRULY blatantly unjust sentences. They didn't accuse the Germans collectively (if at all) of racism and hatred and they did not make demands.

Does anybody see a pattern here?

Jew Hatred from the Cradle

One of the major topics of my blog is the deep in the German culture ingrained hatred of Jews. Read At Full Gallop through German History with links to further information there or elsewhere. Part of it is the long-standing bleeding-heart empathy for the Palestinian Arabs.

Lately, the picture of a toddler wearing a kefija-styled baby bib attracted some attention here. I did a Google search for "Palituch and children" (="kefija and children") and -- lo and behold! -- there is an entire market for it.

4,160 hits for "Palituch" (kefija) and "Kinder" (children). To be fair, quite a few of them are critical of the kefija and contain some information for youngsters why they ought not to wear it. As I haven't browsed through all the 4,000 plus hits, from a cursory overview I'd say that this applies to a quarter of them, which is, I guess, better than nothing.

Some details from the majority:

"This shawl has a long historiy and is right now totally hip again. The shawl is doubly woven and from 100% cotton..."

This is pretty self-explaining. Halstuch/Tuch = shawl, and they are "lovingly made". You bet!

"Finally mother and baby can wear the super-hip partner look. Stylish [notice the appalling Anglicism!] kefija for babies, the mini-variant, so to say, for mommy's large shawl..."

Granted, many of those sellers may not know what they are doing and are, dumb, deaf and daft, waxing lyrically about super-hip kefijas for babies, made with love, as they would swoon over anything they intend to sell. However, something like "This shawl has a long history and is right now totally hip again" leaves not just some doubt about the sellers intentions (but then, maybe there ARE people who are drivelling about "history" and don't know what this specific history is about, namely the hatred and genocide of Jews) but is frightening in its, maybe inadvertent, accuracy as well. Jew hatred IS "totally hip again" in Germany.

While many sellers and buyers of the kefija may not consciously intend to express hatred of Jews, but rather a vague feeling of being "anti-imperialist" of "leftist" (if that), it is certainly a fact that in Germany, and in Germany only, an environment exists, where a symbol of hatred for Jews and genocidal intent could become a "hip" part of children's wardrobe. How do I know that? I tried an English language search for "kefija/kefijah/kefije/kefijeh and children" and didn't get a single hit and even the French, although their passion for the Arafat mop is considerable, they don't offer any pour des bébés ("Pastinien and foulard and enfants"). Do you want me to try Spanish, the Slav languages and some Bantoo dialects as well?

There is a large intersection, mind you, between the buyers and sellers of that sort of stuff and those who throw everything, from hissy fit to court trial, at the first sight of any swastika. Yes, we have learned a lot from our past.

Commenter Jake Neuman sent me a link to his website with a summary of his book Islam: Evil in the Name of God. I haven't read it (yet), but judging from the summary and the brief preview at Amazon, I find it sufficiently important to give it some publicity.

The picture of the Iranian woman hanging from a construction
boom on the front cover is dedicated to the two thousand women
hanged in Iran since the revolution. They are all the first Nedas.

It is dedicated to the 10 Bahá' religious women hanged
in Shiraz Iran in 1983 after they refused to renounce
their religion and become Muslims - Mona Mahmudnizhad,
who was just 17 years old, 23 year old Roya Ishraqi, a
promising veterinary student, was executed with her 50 year
old mother, Izzad Janami Ishraqi, 20 year old Akhtar Sabit,
a graduate nurse, 28 year old Mahshid Nirumand a physics
graduate from the University of Shiraz, Shirin Dalvand 25
years old, Tahirih Siyavushi a 32 year old nurse, 20 year
old Simin Sabiri, Zarrin Muqimi and the oldest 54 year old
Mrs Nosrat Yalda'I.

Another Neda was Dina Parnabi an Iranian high school student,
accused of smuggling forbidden literature and criticising the
regime in her talks with her classmates. She was hanged on the
10th of July 1984 in a Teheran prison. The hanging was done in
private andafter the execution was over, her body was stripped,
washed and delivered for dissection at medical school.

16 year old Atefeh Rajabi was hanged in public in the town of
NekaAtefeh. Atefeh was executed for “engaging in acts
incompatible with chastity.” At the place of execution in the
town’s square, the judge personally put the rope around the
girl’s neck and gave the signal to the crane operator to begin
her hanging. Witnesses reported that she begged for mercy
and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the execution
truck. Judge Haji Rezaie said he was pleased to hang her and
is quoted as saying, "Society has to be kept safe from acts
against public morality." Her body was left dangling from the
crane for some time so people could see what happened to
teenagers who committed acts incompatible with chastity.

187 of these first Neda’s were under the age of 18, with 9
girls under the age of 13. The youngest girl executed was
just 10 years old. Thirty two of these women were reported to
have been pregnant at the time of their execution. Many of
those executed were high school and college students. Hanging
is the most common method of execution for women, although
some are shot. Men and women were hanged in large groups
in Tehran prisons from cranes and forklift trucks. Each crane
jib or forklift had a wooden or steel beam to which the noose
was attached and when the preparations were complete, the
prisoners were simply hoisted into the air.

Under Revolutionary law, young girls who were sentenced to
death could not be executed if they were still virgins.

Thus, they were "married off" to Revolutionary Guards and
prison officials in temporary marriages and then raped before
their execution, to prevent them going to heaven. The Mullahs
believed that these women were ungodly and did not deserve
paradise in the next life and that if they were deprived of their
virginity, it would ensure that they went to hell. Therefore, on
the night prior to execution, the condemned girl was injected
witha tranquilliser and then raped by her guard(s). After the
execution,the religious judge at the prison would write out a
marriage certificate and send it to the victim's family along with
a box of sweets.

The back cover is of 3 gays murdered by Iranian justice
according to the holy teachings of Islam.


This book exposes the evil of Islam and very grave
danger Islamic ideology poses to all freedom

For Muslims, it is a holy religious duty to murder kafirs.
The Koran is written in the language of terrorism.

terrorize the non Muslims, kill them, and take possession
of their lands and properties. The important points to

Peace Is Kow-Towing to Islam

So the handsome bag of hot air in the White House got the Nobel Peace Price "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

My first reaction was to think it's a political jest, a sort of brainteaser. But having finally gotten a grip, it doesn't seem all that surreal anymore, rather only too real. What did Obama actually do within the short time he is in office? Domestically, a lot of things to keep grievances and polarisation between the races alive and thriving, while peddling his (and his wife's) mawkish self-promotion, but that doesn't count all that much for the awarders. Externally, and that DOES count, a summary is equally easy. His first official interview was with a Muslim radio network, his entire demeanour towards the Muslim world is humble and conciliatory, stressing his own Muslim ties and hopes for a Palestinian state, an attitude he even maintains when asked if America could “live with” Iranian nuclear weapons. (A recipe for peace if I have ever seen one.) His term in office took off with a Mideast peace push that included an unequivocal demand for Israel to halt settlement activity in the West Bank, and we all know how well that "land for peace"-thingy has worked so far for Israel, don't we. But to be fair, he isn't all THAT much more hostile towards Israel or the Jews in the Middle East than American officials have been, historically, anyway.

His job, he said, is "to communicate [to the Muslim world] that the Americans are not your enemy”, which is not easily to bring in line with another "job", namely the protection of his country from further Muslim aggression, and yes, when we equate "peace" with that of the graveyard, the awarders of the Nobel Peace Price are not all THAT far off the mark.

But let's stop the cynicisms. Dear Americans, didn't he swear to protect you and your country? And does anybody remember the botched oath? Does anybody see a connection here? Does anybody remember, too, that he grew up as a Muslim and that this "religion" punishes apostasy by death, yet that he is, of all notable apostates, the only one still alive and not under massive death threats? Does anybody remember his butt high in the air, bowing to the Saudi king like a waiter, this leader of the free world? Does anybody ever seriously ask him why? Or where the money for his campaign came from? Too many questions only too many people never ask.

WHY don't you ever seriously ask all that, Americans? Now you will go on bellyaching that a leftist liberal pinko commie, a charismatic seducing his followers in either Stalinist or Nazi spirit (depending on the bogeyman pf choice) and anti-white racist is now at the receiving end of the Nobel Peace Price while the Muslim world will do ... WHAT?


The good side? Easy! There have been worse choices:

Why am I not amazed?

Psychologists in Canada may have found out that people who become eco-conscious consumers are "more likely to steal and lie" than others. Authors of the study are Professor Nina Mazar of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and her colleague Chen-Bo Zhong. "Buying products that claim to be made with low environmental impact can set up 'moral credentials' in people’s minds that give license to selfish or questionable behavior."

Germany's Shameful Unity Day

One week ago, September 27, 2009, the post-Communist party DIE LINKE ("The Left") successful successor of the Stalinist SED of the former GDR, was able to pocket the following election results for the Bundestag (the federal parliament that elects the chancellor):

CDU/CSU 33.8 %
SPD 23.0 %
FDP 14.6 %
DIE LINKE 11.9 %
B90/Grüne 10.7 %.

Had the results of the SPD dropped not quite so dramatically, DIE LINKE might have become part of a coalition to rule the country together with them.

In the constituency of Werdau, the CDU ended first with 34.6 % to a second of DIE LINKE with 28.7 %.

Why do I specifically mention Werdau, a small town in West Saxony in the former GDR? Here is why:

In memoriam of the 19 young people who were sentenced by the GDR-judiciary on October 3, 1951* to altogether 130 years of Zuchthaus**.

In self-made flyers they stood up for Germany's unity and protested against Stalinist terror.

The Werdauer Oberschülerprozess, the court case of the high school students from Werdau, was a trial of 19 young people, most of them students at the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule in Werdau, in 1951. They were accused of "boycott-baiting of democratic institutions and organisations", Boykotthetze gegen demokratische Einrichtungen und Organisationen.

The first two arrests were made in the night of Friday, May 18, 1951. Many chairs remained empty in Werdau high school on Monday.

Almost half a year, the boys and girls waited for their trial, isolated from each other and without any communication with their parents. Some of them were supposed to pass their final secondary-school examinations to go to university during that time. Instead, they were subjected to one of the most memorable political trials in the former GDR.

Not long ago, Sovjet military tribunals had made short work of comparable cases. Roughly 1,200 high school students are said to have been trialled in Berlin, Mittweida, Güstrow, Jüterbog, Schwerin, Weimar, Wittenberge and other places.

In Altenburg, two students and two teachers were sentenced to death and executed. They had interfered with a radio transmission of President Wilhelm Pieck's speech to celebrate Stalin's birthday. In Werder, Brandenburg, 20 young people were trialled. 9 death sentences were imposed, including two against women, eight were executed. Some of the other convicts ended up in Sovjet camps.

On October 3, 1951, the 19 students from Werdau were sentenced to long-term Zuchthaus* imprisonment by the Landgericht Zwickau. Only "politically reliable" people were allowed to attend the trial. The students' parents and family were excluded, newspaper reports were not allowed. When the West Berlin radio station covered the going-ons, Werdau was cut off the electricity network. Parents who tried to see their children were beaten out of the court building.

There had never been a fair chance of defense, however, the young people remained unfaltering. Joachim Gäbler closed his plea, stating: "I am proud to have fought for freedom."

They served up to five and a half years of their sentences, sharing cells with murderers and sex offenders and were deployed to clean the excrement buckets. However, they were comparatively lucky. Without the XX. party convention of the Sovjet Communists and Chruschtschow's reckoning with Stalinism in 1956, they wouldn't have been released so relatively soon. Outside, they had to learn again how to eat with knife and fork or how to tie a tie. The days of their youth were over when they had hardly begun.

Fifteen of the students left the GDR after the last one of their fellow convicts was released, so as not to compromise him. In West Germany they were, after undignified hassle attempting to deny them their rights, finally recognised as political prisoners.

Was justice done after re-unification?

In 1992, Joachim Gäbler filed, for himself and the other former student convicts, a request for criminal prosecution against the surviving participants in the trial. 1996, the Dresden public prosecutor submitted an indictment against the two judges still alive, Fritz Hübsch and Edith Müller. Proceedings against Hübsch were stopped due to his inability to follow the trial (presumably because of old age). Proceedings against Müller were stopped against a payment of 4,000 DM. Forthousand Deutschmark was the price for the youth of 19 boys and girls.

1990, the "Day of German Unity" was moved from June 17, the anniversary of the 1953 East Berlin rebellion against the Stalinist regime, to October 3 in a successful attempt to remove it firmly from its roots. But, it seems, it wasn't all that easy to find a crimeless day to celebrate German unity, which is, after all, of a twisted higher justice.

2009 almost a third of the votes of the citizens of Werdau electing the federal parliament, the Bundestag, went to the post-Communist successor of the Stalinist SED, DIE LINKE.

'German Patriot' Converts to Islam

The German "Pro" parties (Pro Köln being the best known one), so I stated when the rally organized by that party gained some notoriety by Robert Spencer's and Pamela Geller's absence in May, are not part of the bona fide "Islam critical" movement. In fact, so I argued, they have nothing against Islam as such, and don't shy away from rubbing shoulders with a world view to which they basically feel a marked affinity, first because it is totalitarian, and second because it is antisemitic/anti-American. What they do NOT want, however, are strangers at their own doorstep. This they call "Überfremdung" -- literally "overforeignisation" -- which is an undisputed- and definitely racist term. It has, I say it again, nothing to do with Islam, but with skin colour.

You will see that I, too, made perfectly clear that many decent people are among those who follow the "Pro" movement for want of any alternative in a political environment hell-bent on submission to Islam. I outlined as well the scandalously hypocritical and unconstitutional action of the German authorities and political classes towards a movement that is undoubtedly legal, as much as one may disapprove of that.

Maybe this bit of news sheds some additional light on it:

Roger Schwedes, former head of the regional branch of Pro-NRW Ruhrgebiet, recently converted to Islam. In an interview with the Islamist website "muslim-markt" he reports in detail about his time with "Pro NRW".

As a former member of the "Republikaner" [one of the -- just -- legal parties in Germany bordering on National Socialist ideology] he considered the "people's movement Pro NRW" young, fresh and full of new ideas... He didn't object to the "Überfremdung" assumptions of the movement because of the overproportional criminal behaviour among migrants. His goal was to find an alternative to the face- and characterless major people parties. Criticism of Islam wasn't all that important to him, what he wanted was to turn away from anti-German, pro-American and capitalism-orientated politics, so Schwedes explained.

Roger Schwedes' conversion to Islam should be seen with a critical eye not just because of his former membership with the Republikaner and Pro NRW, but as well because of antisemitic statements approved by him. Interestingly, Pro NRW claims now to have expelled him because of that, which, not surprisingly, is untrue: Schwedes resigned out of his own motivation and the head of Pro NRW, Markus Beisicht, thanked him for his cooperation over many years and the achieved "success for the organisation". Successor of Schwedes in the Ruhrgebiet happened to become the notorious Neonazi defence lawyer André Picker.

I wonder why nobody (myself included) asked Pamela Geller, Geert Wilders' great confidante, why HE did NOT attend the Pro-Köln rally back in May. Is it possible that she finally and much too late, namely after she had consented to attend, had a word with him and that THAT was the reason why she and Spencer refrained from attending, and not the fear that Charles Johnson of LGF-infame might drown their cyber rubber duckie? But it's always easier to blame somebody else than to admit that one has made a mistake, isn't it?

And so this self-hating German liberal leftist pinko commie (sorry if I forgot a couple of names I've been called) rests her case.

While the worst-case scenario I outlined two weeks ago didn't happen, I am not all that optimistic when it comes to Germany's future. Above all, I don’t share Richard Spencer’s kindly view of neither, the Christian Democrats as they are nor of Angela Merkel, and specifically any comparison, even a far-fetched one like here, with Pim Fortuyn or Geert Wilders is preposterous. Merkel couldn’t manage to form another coalition with her partner of choice, the Social Democrats, which is a good thing. However, I am not all that optimistic about the value of the Free Democrats either. They are the party most open to the Islamisation of Germany, partly because of their liberal understanding of society, partly -- they define themselves as the party for the well-to-do and business people -- because of the opportunities the trade with the Muslim countries offer.

Angela Merkel doesn’t deserve her second mandate, but got it for want of any alternative. The woman who lately told the pope from a great height how to run his shop while standing next to a Muslim potentate has managed to confine the Christian Democrats to utter meaninglessness within just four years. It wasn't what I had expected. Four years ago she got my vote. This time I joined the mightiest party in Germany, the party of the non-voters.

Here is a streaming video from the ARD (full name Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – "Consortium of public-law broadcasters of the Federal Republic of Germany") news magazine Nachtmagazin broadcast on September 16, 2009. For the record: The ARD took off in 1952 as Deutsches Fernsehen ("German Television"), switching to Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen ("First German Television") at the advent of ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen in 1963, a name which it later adopted officially, indicating that it is the country's primary network. The newsflick includes a feature covering the release of "shoethrower" Mountazer / Muntazer al-Zaidi / Montasser al-Saidi in Iraq. It starts at 14:43. Switch right through to the end, where the coverage of his press conference ends at 15:07 on an interesting note and, even more interestingly, rather abruptly.

The makers of this ARD news feature don't even begin to make an attempt to distance themselves from the fawning reception Mr. Shoethrower got within the Arab world. Here, too, the gist comes across to non-German speakers as well, or so I think.

"Just for the taste of it!"

The Christian Science Monitor offers some views on the current German election race at their global news blog:

Chancellor Angela Merkel debated Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on TV Monday, ahead of Sept. 27 elections.

A televised debate between the two candidates for Germany’s highest office was declared a draw by unimpressed Germans, as an election looms two weeks away for Europe’s top economy.

The election will pit center-right incumbent Angela Merkel against her current foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, from the left-leaning Social Democrat party.

At stake is whether Germany will chart a course out of recession with tax cuts and other business-friendly measures (Merkel) or pursue more state-led strategies such as funds for emerging industries, higher minimum wages and tighter regulations on executive pay (Steinmeier).

But many Germans have been left cold by both candidates. Playing on US President Obama’s campaign theme, the German newspaper Bild ran an analysis of the debate with the mocking headline, “Yes, we gahn!” (Yes, we yawn).

Deutsche Welle called the debate “uninspiring” in a roundup of the German press reaction; other descriptions included “shop talk between the chancellor and her deputy,” with “no real verbal sparring.”

The Associated Press said surveys were mixed, and cited a political analyst saying that the “well-mannered duel” was unlikely to change many voters’ minds.

Surveys carried out by three television stations after Sunday night’s duel found that viewers rated it a virtual draw, two putting Steinmeier marginally ahead and one giving a slight advantage to the conservative Merkel.

The debate, like much of the campaign, lacked passion and personal attacks between rivals who govern together in a “grand coalition” of right and left — the result of an indecisive 2005 election.

But the Wall Street Journal said undecided viewers favored Steinmeier, and gave the left-leaning candidate good reviews for a “snappy, vigorous debating performance.”

He argued for new tax rules to deter high executive pay and bonuses, and for minimum wages to slow the growing gap between Germany’s highest and lowest earners.

Mr. Steinmeier warned that the right-leaning government Ms. Merkel is seeking would pursue free-market policies of deregulation that he said had caused the global financial crash. “The thinking that got us into this crisis can’t get us out of it,” he said.

Merkel, by contrast, stuck to a pro-growth message, according to the Journal. The Journal said the candidates’ only significant foreign policy difference was on German troop deployments in Afghanistan, which two-thirds of Germans oppose.

Steinmeier said Germany should by 2013 “lay the groundwork” for pulling its troops out; Merkel offered no timeline.

To start on a negantive note: It is not Germany's "highest office" that the debaters are aiming for. It is the most important office. We have a head of state and that is NOT the chancellor. Frankly, lack of basic knowledge like that doesn't inspire much faith in a political commenter. Get some education. In such a light, it doesn't really amaze that Merkel and her Christian Democrats are dubbed "conservative" all the time by Americans. But hey! Can they really be blamed for it? Germans are doing it all the time themselves. One the other hand, Germans don't know what "conservative" means, Americans do, or at least: they ought to, and, apart from a some issues dear to a Catholic's heart that can be linked to a conservative world view, there is nothing "conservative" about the CDU, never was, never will be. The CDU was founded post-WWII as the successor of the "Zentrum" (which translates, notabene, to "Center") the party of political Catholicism, devoted in considerable parts to the Catholic social doctrine, something which will remind Americans painfully of liberal leftis pinkos, the more dumber ones even of commie marxists. And that knowledge is just a couple of keystrokes and mouseclicks away at Wikipedia.

Now Merkel: During the entire debate she managed to totally and utterly avoid terms like "Christian" (even "Christian-Democratic"), "values", "family", "ethics", "human dignity" and "Lebensschutz" (= "pro life"), and even those who notice that at all and predict that Merkel will thus lose her "party stalwarts" are barking up the wrong tree. What "party stalwarts"? Those who voted for the CDU because they were Christian/Catholic, are dying out rapidly.

Merkel was socialized in the former GDR. Her parents went with baby Angela, who had been born in Hamburg, to the GDR. Only hardcore Socialists went voluntarily to the Stalinist GDR to live there, so this sheds a light on the political proclivities of her father, a Protestant pastor. (By the way, that knowledge, too, is just a couple of keystrokes and mouseclicks away at Wikipedia.) She was never heavily involved in official party politics and described her FDJ youth movement years as "cultural work" later. It is not too amazing for a Protestant pastor's daughter either that she she did not take part in the secular coming of age rite "Jugendweihe", but was confirmed instead. She chose science as a profession, like many bright and gifted students did in the GDR, because it provided a relatively politics- and hassle-free environment. But all that does NOT say that Merkel is NOT a Socialist. Pure and simple, she is. Even if her politics so far were NOT testimony to that (they are) what she is doing now is aiming head-on at another four years of coalition with the Social Democrats. Why? Any other choice would bind her to the free-market Free Democrats (FDP), and that is exactly what she does NOT want. And if Steinmeier, who is bound to know that quite well, is blathering about "the right-leaning government Ms. Merkel is seeking" he is an even worse hypocrite than Merkel herself. Steinmeier, by the way, belonged, together with current minister of justice in Merkel's Cabinet, Brigitte Zypries, to the editorial staff of the leftist quarterly "Demokratie und Recht" (DuR) published by Pahl-Rugenstein-Verlag, who was at that time under observation by the office for the protection of the constitution (Verfassungsschutz). So far about some major members of "conservative" Angela Merkel's Cabinet.

We are heading for a diet version of the GDR -- "Just for the taste of it!". Mark my words.
