Senior U.S. officials are concerned over recent intelligence indicating that the Pakistani Taliban, which orchestrated the failed Times Square bombing, may have successfully placed another operative inside the United States to launch a second attack, sources tell Fox News. Authorities, however, know very little about the potential operative or any possible plot.

"[We] don't know who it is and don't know where it is," one source said. "We know the guy's here, but don't know anything about him."

Based on the intelligence, authorities believe the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan, would have directed the individual to attempt another Times Square-style operation, but not necessarily in New York City.

A senior intelligence official said the threat stream's lack of specificity makes it nearly impossible for the counterterrorism community to defend against such an attack. Any possible threat, however, does not seem to be imminent, with a senior counterterrorism official saying he was "unaware" of any "imminent threats" against the U.S. homeland.

Nevertheless, the Pakistani Taliban has been looking to make up for its previous failure. Authorities believe the subject of the latest intelligence would use "a similar mechanism" and the "same modus operandi" employed by 31-year-old Faisal Shahzad in May, mostly "because it's easily accessible here," as one source put it.

In the months leading up to his attack, Shahzad purchased fertilizer, propane gas, fireworks and other components from stores in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. But the bomb he ultimately built and packed inside a sport utility vehicle did not detonate properly.

If someone successfully set off such a bomb, the effects would be "devastating," according to federal prosecutors. In June, FBI agents built and tested a device identical to Shahzad's, except this time they made sure the bomb actually detonated.

"Had the bombing played out as Shahzad had so carefully planned, the lives of numerous residents and visitors of the city would have been lost and countless others would have been forever traumatized," federal prosecutors said in court documents filed in the Shahzad case two weeks ago. "This is to say nothing of the significant economic and emotional impact a successful attack would have had on the entire nation."

Authorities are describing the latest threat as "credible but not specific," and they are "very nervous," according to the sources. It's unclear exactly when or how the intelligence was obtained, but one source said it was "corroborated" by authorities. Others were unable to say the intelligence had been corroborated.

"In many cases, intelligence we get ends up washing out," said the senior counterterrorism official, who would not specifically discuss or even confirm the latest intelligence.

It's also unclear when or how the operative would have entered the United States, but the recent intelligence says he would have been sent from Pakistan's tribal areas, where only months earlier associates of the Pakistani Taliban trained Shahzad to build and detonate bombs, according to the senior intelligence official.

A secret FBI test of a correctly made version of the Times Square bomb revealed that it "would have killed thousands of people" if it had been made to explode as terrorists had intended, law-enforcement sources told The New York Post.

Had he built the Times Square device the way he had originally intended to, terrorist Faisal Shahzad, would have turned his SUV and nearby vehicles into a fatal spray of razor-sharp fragments and transformed building windows into glass guillotines hurtling to the streets, cutting down hundreds of people walking by.

The results were discovered after feds composed the type of bomb Shahzad set out to make -- with the exact components he had initially intended to use -- and exploded it in Pennsylvania last month.

"It would have been the biggest thing ever to happen in this country since Sept. 11," another source said.

"It definitely would have been bigger than [the 1995] Oklahoma City" bombing of the federal building that killed 168 people, the source said. "There would have been a lot of casualties."

At the end of June, the FBI built its replica of the bomb to test its destructive force, sources said. The results of the explosive test were sobering -- showing that Shahzad was on track to becoming the biggest individual mass murderer in U.S. history, several sources said.

The increasingly obvious irony is this: Had either or both of these attacks succeeded, plans for the Ground Zero mosque would have been, at the very least, quietly shelved until it was determined that we had all forgotten. The fact that the mosque is on track to be built now sadly illustrates how short that time can be.

As the violent jihad continues to fail in this country, the stealth jihad advances -- and the question becomes whether it will require success at the former to awaken our snoring citizens to the encroachments of the latter. This is a devil's bargain we should have never got ourselves stuck in.

(Boston Herald)- Federal agents today executed search warrants in Watertown and other locations across the Northeast in connection with the investigation into the attempted May 1 Times Square bombing, said Warren T. Bamford, Boston FBI Special Agent in Charge.

FBI agents are also on scene at a Harvard Street Mobil gas station and used car lot in Brookline at this hour, but it is unclear whether the activity is related to the Times Square probe.

“We can confirm that search warrants have been executed in several locations in the Northeast in connection with the investigation into the attempted Times Square bombing,” Bamford said. “A number of individuals encountered during the searches were taken into federal custody for alleged immigration violations.“

Bamford said the searches “are the product of evidence that has been gathered in the investigation subsequent to the attempted Times Square bombing and do not relate to any known immediate threat to the public or active plot against the United States."

Accused Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad had been on a terror-related watch list since 1998. He was caught bringing $80,000 in cash into the U.S. from Pakistan.

Shahzad, born in Karachi Pakistan, was granted an F-1 student visa in December 1998. He earned a B.A. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Bridgeport in 2000 and was granted an H-1B visa -- reserved for skilled "specialty occupation" workers -- in April of 2002. Three years later, on that same visa, he earned an M.B.A.

On Oct. 20, 2008, he reported to immigration authorities that he had married Huma Asif Mian, an American citizen. Shortly thereafter -- on April 17, 2009 -- he gained his citizenship via a naturalization ceremony in Bridgeport.

The key question that no one seems to be asking is this: how, after showing up on at least one Treasury Department watch list, was Shabazz (whatever) granted his citizenship? No one is talking on the record, but the implication is clear: it is extremely likely there was a policy change directed by the White House and/or State Department.

“We’ve now developed evidence that shows that the Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack,” Holder said on “This Week.”

“We know that they helped facilitate it. We know that they probably helped finance it. And that he was working at their direction.”

Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square bomber, grew up in a Pakistani family whose circle of acquaintances included two future militants — a Taliban leader and one of the participants in the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, a government source said Friday.

Officials now believe this family background may help explain why Shahzad, after immigrating to the United States, grew radicalized and allegedly contacted the Pakistani Taliban via the Internet. The group would have welcomed him because as a naturalized U.S. citizen, he could easily travel to and from Pakistan.

Agents interviewing Shahzad, 30, who lived in Connecticut, also learned that he was upset over repeated CIA drone attacks on militants in Pakistan, his native country. He was also troubled by marital and financial difficulties and a foreclosure on his home, said the government source, who has been briefed on the investigation. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing.

The revelations provide fresh indications that the Pakistani Taliban — in the past mainly concerned with fighting the Pakistani government — has broadened its focus to include the U.S. by encouraging Shahzad to detonate a Nissan Pathfinder in New York last week.

But it remained unclear whether Shahzad's Internet contact with the Taliban was an attempt to volunteer, or whether the militants reached out to him.

"What we don't know is if he was actively recruited by these guys or if he recruited himself," said a second source, a senior U.S. official.

But, the senior official said, if the Taliban has widened its focus to carry out attacks on the United States, then "it would change the game." He added that it could force the U.S. to reassess the threat it faces from Pakistan and how best to respond.

Several people have been arrested in Pakistan, in connection with the attempted Times Square bombing attempt, security sources have said.

"We have picked up a few family members" related to Faisal Shahzad, the chief suspect in the failed attack, a security official in Karachi said.

Shahzad, an American man of Pakistani descent, is being held after he was stopped while trying to flee the country, according to officials.

The 30-year-old was attempting to board a plane bound for Dubai at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York, authorities said.

But the law enforcement source said Shahzad denied any ties to radical groups in Pakistan and said he received no help to plan the attack.

"He's admitted to buying the truck, putting the devices together, putting them in the truck, leaving the truck there and leaving the scene," the source said.

"He's claimed to have acted alone. He did admit to all the charges, so to speak."

Shahzad recently visited Pakistan for about five months, returning to the US in February, according to the source.

"Based on our collective experience it's hard to really believe that this is something someone would do on their own," the source said.

"It seems hard to pull off alone. There's a lot we don't know yet."

However, the Pakistan embassy has said Shahzad appears to be a lone "disturbed individual".

Emirates Airline revealed US officials took two other people off the Dubai-bound flight.

Chase sued him in September after he defaulted on $200,000 loan

The suspect in the Times Square bombing attempt defaulted on a $200,000 mortgage on his Connecticut home and the Shelton property is now in foreclosure, according to court records.

The foreclosure records show Faisal Shahzad took out the mortgage on a home in Shelton, Conn., in 2004, and he co-owned the home with a woman named Huma Mian.

Chase Home Finance LLC sued Shahzad, 30, in September to force the foreclosure. The case is pending in Milford Superior Court.

Former neighbors described him as a family man who reportedly said he worked on Wall Street.

After being forced to leave the Shelton home, Shahzad moved to a home in Bridgeport, Conn., and FBI agents searched that property early Tuesday, removing filled plastic bags. A bomb squad came and went without entering as local police and FBI agents gathered in the cordoned-off street.

In Shelton, former neighbor Brenda Thurman told the New York Times that Shahzad and his wife, Huma Mian, spoke limited English and kept mostly to themselves. The couple had two young children, a girl and a boy, she said.

Thurman told the newspaper that the couple had lived at the house at 119 Long Hill Avenue for about three years before moving out last year.

"He was a little bit strange," she told the Associated Press. "He didn't like to come out during the day."

Thurman showed reporters a laptop computer showing a Facebook photo of her neighbor, the New Haven Independent reported. The photo showed Shahzad with a woman and a child.

Another neighbor, Audrey Sokol, said she thought Shahzad worked in nearby Norwalk. Sokol, a teacher, said that he would wave and say hello and that he seemed normal to her.

The Shelton home is a two-story grayish-brown colonial with a sloping yard in a working-class neighborhood. On Tuesday morning, the home looked as if it had been unoccupied for a while.

Shahzad left around May 2009, Thurman said, and his wife followed about a month later.

Pakistani police told NBC News that Shahzad traveled from the United States to Karachi on July 3, 2009, returning to the United States on Aug. 8, 2009. During that time, he is believed to have traveled to Peshawar, a major city in the region bordering Afghanistan known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Shahzad was taken into custody late Monday by FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives at Kennedy Airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai, according to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and other officials.

Investigators still don't have evidence that Shahzad is connected to the Pakistani Taliban or any foreign terror groups. Said one government source: "He's claimed to have acted alone, but these are things that have to be investigated."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Faisal Shahzad, the man arrested Monday in connection with the failed plot to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square, was trying to board a flight to Dubai when he was apprehended, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday.

Holder said Shahzad, a U.S. citizen, was detained by agents from Customs and Border Protection at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The attorney general described the investigation as "multifaceted" and said federal, state and local authorities are continuing to pursue a number of leads. "As we move forward, we will focus on not just holding those responsible for it accountable, but also on obtaining any intelligence about terrorist organizations overseas," he said.

Holder suggested authorities may be searching for more suspects, saying, "We will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice."

"It's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans," Holder said. "It's important that the American people remain vigilant."

Officials who spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation said Shahzad had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife.

Shahzad, who has a Shelton, Conn., address, was being held in New York.

We cannot depend on the defense of luck on our side and incompetence on theirs. We cannot depend on apologies on the presidential scale to ingratiate ourselves with governments who snicker at us and are petrified of the very people in their own nations who carry out these actions. We cannot depend on drone attacks to kill just the leaders in Waziristan, Pakistan or Afghanistan, the Maghreb, Ethiopia, Somalia or anywhere else.

Never mind 16,500 more IRS people to ensure participation in an ill advised, unpopular and born to fail waste of money called the Health Care bill, we needed those people for something else.

Those who come here, as part of the American immigration endeavor, will have to submit to the idea that they are going to be looked at by national technical means and otherwise.

Right now this American who must get all the rights our courts demand, must be used as a case study for the defensive side of this war.

Federal authorities arrested a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent Monday night on New York's Long Island in connection with the attempted Times Square car bombing, Fox News has learned.

The man was identified as Shahzad Faisal of Connecticut, according to NBC News.

American Who Recently Visited Pakistan Eyed in Times Square Bomb Plot

Federal authorities have identified a person of interest in Saturday night's Times Square bomb attempt -- a naturalized American citizen who was in Pakistan for several months and returned to the United States recently, investigative sources told Fox News.

The latest developments seem to support investigators' suspicions that there was a foreign connection behind the failed car bomb attempt in New York City, senior Obama administration officials told Fox News, shedding light on the growing body of evidence.

Sources say that evidence includes international phone calls made by the person of interest, who has not been identified publicly. The Associated Press identified the person as a man of Pakistani descent, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.

Police also have interviewed the registered owner of the bomb-laden sports-utility vehicle. They say he is not a suspect, but he recently sold the dark-colored 1993 Nissan Pathfinder on Craigslist to another individual, whom the Associated Press reports was the Pakistani-American.

The bomb scare forced the evacuation of Times Square on a busy Saturday night, as police used a robot to break into the smoking SUV and diffuse the makeshift explosive, which was made from everyday items, such as propane tanks and firecrackers.

One Obama administration official, while acknowledging the crudeness of the bomb, cautioned, "Do not necessarily assume that the plot behind it was not sophisticated."

The SUV's vehicle identification number had been removed from Pathfinder's dashboard, but it was stamped on the engine and axle, and investigators used it to find the owner of record. CBS News reports that owner told investigators he recently sold the vehicle for $1,300 to someone who looked "Middle Eastern" or "Hispanic." The buyer reportedly paid in $100 bills.

Sources told Fox News that investigators are focusing on the similarities between the failed attack in New York City and both the 2007 attack on Glasgow's airport in Scotland and the attempted bombing of a London nightclub the same year. Propane gas and gasoline were used in all three incidents.

In New York, police and FBI were examining hundreds of hours of video from around the area and wanted to speak with a man in his 40s who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the Pathfinder.

The video shows the man slipping down Shubert Alley and taking off his shirt, revealing another underneath. In the same clip, looks back in the direction of the smoking vehicle and puts the first shirt in a bag.

They traveled to Pennsylvania for video shot by a tourist of a different person, and were evaluating the tape and determining whether to make it public.

On Monday, the White House for the first time clearly defined the attempted attack as an act of terrorism, without saying whether it was the work of a foreign or domestic plot.

"I think anybody that has the type of material that they had in a car in Times Square, I would say that that was intended to terrorize. Absolutely," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said when asked by Fox News how the White House would categorize the incident. "And I would say that whoever did that would be categorized as a terrorist. Yes."

Obama administration officials previously stopped short of declaring the incident terrorism.

New York Gov. David Paterson immediately called the attempted attack an "act of terrorism" after police were alerted to the bomb and cleared out Times Square Saturday night. But Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday said it was too early to officially designate the incident as terrorism.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, in several interviews since Sunday, has by turns described the incident as a potential or likely terrorist act, though she said investigators need to find out more about the origin of the plot.

"It certainly is something that I would not rule out," she told Fox News on Monday morning.

A Pakistani Taliban group released a videotape that appeared to claim responsibility for the incident, but New York City officials said they had no evidence to support that.

NEW YORK - Authorities arrested a suspect in the attempted weekend car bombing in Times Square, NBC News' justice correspondent Pete Williams reported early Tuesday morning.

A U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, Shahzad Faisal, was trying to leave the country Monday night at John F Kennedy International Airport when he was picked up by Customs and Border Protection agents, Williams reported.

Earlier, an official told The Associated Press that the potential suspect recently traveled to Pakistan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the case was at a sensitive stage.

The officials said the man was a Connecticut resident who paid cash weeks ago for the SUV parked in Times Square on Saturday and rigged with a crude propane-and-gasoline bomb.

NBC's Williams reported the man's name was on an e-mail that was sent to the seller of the car last month, as well as other evidence suggesting he had a role in the attempted bombing.

A Muslim extremist who earlier warned that TV's "South Park" creators should be "afraid for their lives" for insulting Islam's prophet Muhammad now says that yesterday's car bomb attempt in Times Square will be just the beginning of a new wave of terrorist attacks.

Younus Abdullah Muhammad, author of RevolutionMuslim.com, told WND senior reporter Aaron Klein on New York's WABC Radio that America should "absolutely" expect more jihadi violence in New York City.

When asked if the Times Square attack was specifically aimed at the offices of nearby Viacom, which owns the "South Park" series, Abdullah Muhammad deflected the question to condemn U.S. foreign policy instead.

"It was a retaliation for what your government is doing overseas," Abdullah Muhammad said. "If you want to continue killing civilians, then you're going to get many incidents that resemble what happened yesterday."

As WND reported, RevolutionMuslim.com last month warned there is a "very real possibility" that "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will end up murdered like Theo Van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker killed by an Islamic extremist in 2004 after making a film critical of Islam.

The website then issued a statement pointing out the Islamic punishment for mocking Muhammad is death, prompting Klein to ask if such words constituted incitement.

"We do not condone nor condemn terrorism," Abdullah Muhammad answered. "There is no relation between our organization and these attacks."

Still, Abdullah Muhammad predicted, "There will be a lot more terror attacks in the Unites States. Probably you should bring your imperial overstretch home before you're destroyed. ... Stop trying to police the world. Nobody likes you people."

CNN: Official: TSA ramping up security measures at East Coast Airports

The Transportation Security Administration on Sunday ramped up security screening at airports along the East Coast after an attempted car bombing a day earlier in New York's Times Square, a Department of Homeland Security official said.

The official told CNN the TSA has begun operations to counter potential car bombs, or "vehicle-born improvised explosive devices," as well as taking measures to prevent other kinds of terrorist acts that might occur in crowded public spaces.

The TSA also is coordinating with Customs and Border Protection to facilitate additional secondary passenger screening on both domestic and international flights, the official said.

Officials in Washington participated in a call with top TSA officials at airports in New York, Boston and Philadelphia to talk about partnering with Customs to identify flights that might need more random screening, the official said.
