The Muezzin Calling the Faithful to Prayer

The Muezzin’s call to prayer, al-Adhan (the ‘dh’ is pronounced as a ‘heavy’ ‘th’ as in ‘thee’) is a particularly mournful drone to sensitive Western ears. It is a most unfortunate din, one feels. Is this what we want in our own towns and villages? Somehow, I doubt it; yet it might well be coming to Oxford very shortly!

Play the following genuine call of the muezzin. I think you will agree that it doesn’t have the happy tones of the peeling of church bells. But then, no one said that the Qur’an was ‘the Good News’, or Gospel. On the contrary, the Qur’an is full of doom and gloom; so we shouldn’t be surprised when the call to prayer in Islam also sounds mournful, also sounds as though the muezzin is in agony! Listen here; see what you think:

Very good point, Mark.

The Koran is about as far from "Good News" as a book can get, isn't it?

Its good news to the believers, because it promises them eternal paradise.

Seems to be a common theme in religions, that.

I also suggest that anyone who lives near to a mosque attempt to silence the call to prayer through the appropriate legal channels: File a noise complaint with the police, and ask neighbours to do the same. As well as hopefully getting them to either shut up or face criminal action (It might take a lot of complaints before the police will risk filing charges) it also provides me with the entertainment of watching the following court battle as the imam tries to claim religious freedom renders his mosque exempt from noise pollution laws.

Personally, I'm for blasting, say, "Finlandia" back at 'em at top volume. The "Hallelujah Chorus" or "Ode to Joy" would work nicely as well.

Do we have any reports from Westerners living in areas currently subject to this yowling 5 times daily? How do they cope, what are they doing to oppose it?

About 3 days worth of that and they would have me up on arson charges for sure.
