There is no way I could prove it. Too many papers & records were destroyed by the Nazis. The true story of the brothers in this movie, they & I may be related (can't reveal why I say that without giving out far too much personal info). Regardless, the story stands on its' own. The book was fucking awesome. I JUST found out they made a movie about it and, God willing and the river don't rise, hope to be first in line Friday night.
If you haven't read or don't know about the Bielski Brothers, they were partisans from Poland who took 1,200 Jews, hid in the forest, lived in the forest, built a village in the forest, for 2 1/2 years evading & resisting the Nazis. And walked out the other side to tell the tale.
This is heroic stuff. Schindler's List heroic. If it was done right will make chickenshit Cruise's latest Valkyrie look lame.

Welcome to the tribe Midnight Rider! Defiance is as big as Schindler's List? - absolutely! The book "The Bielski Brothers" was a very quick read and like you, has me waiting with great anticipation for it's cinematic release - which was changed far too many times. My heart sank when IMbD stated "Defiance" had enjoyed 'limited release' on December 30th in the US - and was not showing in any zip code I plugged in (CA, NY, FL, AR, KS) for showtimes. Just checked, and it finally comes to my local theatres this week. Pass the popcorn!

The last time Zwick did a movie about jihad 'The Siege', he totally contaminated it with a view of what an US military administration would be like. Granted, this was in 1998, when Jihadi plots for over 10 years were just being put into operation, like the Embassy bombings. However, it's been 10 years now, and the US military has run administrations in Bagram and Baghdad, thereby debunking that part of the movie's theme.
Therefore, when you do meet Zwick, can you ask him to, in his next movie on the subject, show Muslims exclusively as the villains, and not dilute that message with other corrupt villainous entities, be it in the FBI, CIA, Mossad or whatever else? People need to know that Muslims are the #1 enemy, and such sub-plots only serve to distract from that message, if not undermine it altogether.
Exit answer: Reason Hollywood Jews love portraying resistance against Nazis, but not Mohammedans is that the Nazis were white, while the overwhelming number of Mohammedans are brown, or at least non-White. As a result, in the eyes of such PC infested artists, Jews resisting jihad would be as bad as Serbs, Russians, Americans, Brits, etc resisting Jihad, whereas vs the Nazis, the Jews were resisting White racism, and therefore heros. Anon (HRW) -- Where Schindler is praised for sheltering Jews (and quite rightly so) the Bielski partisans hid, sheltered and openly resisted the Nazis.

history channel (I believe thats where I saw it) had a documentary on the brothers the other night. it was fascinating.
apparently at one point a local was turning in jews to the nazis... they went and got him out of bed brought him to the forest and cut off his head.
they dumped the body with the message this is what happens to nazi collaborators.
I kinda remember the incident (I read the book when it first came out a few years ago -- reread time) but don't remember how they executed him.

Don't get your hopes too high up for this film.
I had high hopes for "MUNICH" and it just made the Mossad look weak and barely showed the brutality of the terrorist attack in Munich.
Anon. I am approaching with very cautious hope. That's why I said I hope it's not just a shoot 'em up. I've no doubt Craig could play this role right, if he's allowed.

Seriously, if you haven't read the book add it high to your pile and see the movie if you can. The story is that good and I hope the film lives up to it.
The Bielski's actually rescued more Jews than Schindler. No small feat you'd agree.

Here's another comment posted that explains:
A week ago, Zwick was interviewed by the BBC World Service (The Strand). The host praised Defiance but saved the "gotcha" for the end when he attempted to equate the Bielsky partisan resistance with the "Gazan resistance". Not unpredictaly, Zwick not only agreed with the host but went him one better by calling the perverse comparison "ironic". He must have been standing next to Spielberg and Tony Kushner at the urinal when he was trying to bankroll his film. Remember that in "Siege", the only villain is the American general played by Bruce Willis. Having got wind of the film's plot, a number of Arab American groups pressured Zwick and Lawrence Wright (a stealth apologist in his own right), the screenwriter, into altering the plot to indict Hollywood's perennial villain, the US military - in the person of Willis. And they quickly truckled. A film that started out as prescient of 9/11 slimed its way into the realm of the blind and vertebraeless. Zwick is sliming to this day.
