Republican in NY House race suspends campaignALBANY, N.Y. — Fighting plunging support, Republican Dierdre Scozzafava abruptly suspended her campaign Saturday in the 23rd Congressional District special election that has exposed a rift among national factions of the party.
Campaign spokesman Matt Burns said Scozzafava thinks stepping aside is for the best of the party. He said Scozzafava is essentially withdrawing from the race, although her name will remain on Tuesday's ballot.
"It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support," Scozzafava said in a written statement. "Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit."
The announcement comes after a Siena College poll found she was in third place with 20 percent of the vote in the heavily Republican district that has been safe ground for the party for more than 100 years. Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman and Democratic nominee Bill Owens were too close to call with 35 percent and 36 percent, respectively.
The race has pitted conservative and moderate wings of the Republican Party against each other in a battle of ideology. The special election in New York's rural north has received national attention as big-name Republicans including Sarah Palin, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson have thrown their support behind Hoffman. Money poured into Hoffman's campaign from all over the country.

SHE JUST ENDORSED THE DEM/LIB...
It's very interesting what is happening. I think we are going to see a new Party arise which is based upon what I would call "Constitutionalism", or basically American Pragmatic Libertarianism (not pie in the sky Libertarianism, like the Libertarian party tries to sell).
I think this new party will ultimately arise and destroy (contrary to what it looks like at this point in time) THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
The Republican Party will shift Left, and the Constitutionalists (The Tea Party?) will be the new Conservative Movement.
It sounds contrary, but if you look at the forces in play, this is what is already happening.
That's why Scuzzafava, who considers herself a Republican, moved to the Dem Party. Because their is a battle going on in the Repub Party, and she lost. Ultimately, her kind will win the Republican Party.
So, what will happen to the Democratic Party, you ask?
They will break up over Obama.
The only way they will survive is if they kick Obama out of office.
If they do that, then the Republican Party will be the one who breaks up.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter which side breaks up, because either way, the Constitutionalist Party is inevitable. And, strangely enough, it will be a Moderate Party. It will be fiscally Conservative and Socially Liberal. Because that's what Americans are, and that's what America is all about.

INSANE.
Madness.
They look (and must feel) like total schmendricks.
However, everyone should recognize that this kernel which is vocal and in this case successful, is small, and can easily be portrayed as braying crazies with a tiny footprint. This is the moment when everyone has to be CENTRIST in intent ... the constitution IS the center. National security IS the center. Personal success (EQUAL OPPORTUNITY) FOR ALL is the center.
Just out of curiousity Epa, why did you put Alexandria Bay in the headline? The article doesn't mention it.
I ask this because I spent many a drunken, debauched weekend in Alex Bay back in the day. Beautiful spot, and many memories. Fuzzy, fuzzy memories.

Jeppo, well it's in the 23rd, and I had my life changed when as a child we went every summer to Alex Bay for vacation and I realized there was a life besides the Bronx, and as a 9 year old tied into a Northern Pike 36" long, and was able to go for walks on the silence of pine needles, and the sounds only of the birds. Later I brought my wife to the Lake of the Isles. A year later we bought a house on a lake in Maine.
