The meaning of the 2009 vote? Fear and disgust, not hope, is a stronger vote motivator

The reality of the change and manifestation of the attempt at 'transformation' by Barack Obama seems to have scared the voters. The big issues at exit according to polls ..economy, real estate taxes.

We are scared the economy is going to be made WORSE, not just that whatever 'they' are doing won't work, and we absolutely don't want higher taxes ...I'm going to guess because we really believe we can't afford it, not on principal.

In NJ and VA there is an unmistakable message.

Voters yesterday who said they were WORRIED about the direction of the nation's economy -- Virginia: 85 percent. New Jersey: 90 percent.

In NJ and VA there is an unmistakable message. Republicans ... FREE ENTERPRISE WORKS, FREE ENTERPRISE IS THE RIGHT DIRECTION ..

FREE ENTERPRISE IS THE WAY OUT OF DAILY FEAR ABOUT THE ECONOMY, CITIZENS

FREE ENTERPRISE WITH SAFETY NETS ....hello?

In Maine, a commercial showing children in 1st grade being taught about gay lifestyles in the name of teaching tolerance caused FEAR of this happening which in turn caused a HUGE turnout and repeal of the law allowing gay marriage, and I mean HUGE. I saw as many people last night as I did for the Obama election.

And in NY23 where the dem won 49-46? Well, FEAR of a 'radical, right wing candidate' was the mesage of the dems, and of the person endorsed by Newt Gingrich, Michael Steele and supported by Boehner and Cantor, all of who can now be wearing a big red "S" (SCHMUCK) on their lapels. The republican ACORN supporting liberal who withdrew and endorsed the democrat polled 6%, THE DIFFERENCE, FELLAS. But what must be notable is that the PORTRAYAL OF HOFFMAN AS A RIGHT WING FREAK worked. Axelrod and Emanuel will take note for 2010, you can be sure.

If you take any of the following positions, and you are to the right of say .... Diane Feinstein, you will be portrayed as a right wing freak unless the letter (D) is after your name:

You are uncomfortable enough with abortion to say so.
You are against abortion as birth control
You think partial birth abortion is murder
You think public paid for health care is unworkable
You think the Constitution means what it says, and that the Bill of Rights trumps other ideas of localism and diversity
You think WE HAVE TO WIN BY KILLING THE ENEMY WHO MEANS TO KILL US WHEREVER THEY ARE AND NO MATTER THE COST
You think NATO should actually function
You recognize that the armed forces can really do only two things, KILL PEOPLE AND BREAK THINGS, and think they should be used for that.
You think non heterosexual lifestyles, or ANY sexual lifestyles should not be taught in grade school in the name of teaching tolerance
You believe in equal opportunity as opposed to equal outcome
You believe the USA should have assimilated cultures into a goop melange of American culture and not separate multicultures

If you flirt with any of these ideas and run for office as anything but a democrat, you will be a right wing fringe freak in your opponents nationally paid for campaign.

The objective: to make the voter FEAR YOU

BET ON IT

Since we don't agree on all of these either, it may come down to a case of who is willing to set aside secondary differences at least temporarily to fight the greater danger.

Of course, but my point is if you think ANY ONE OF THESE you are going to be a right wing freak. Just ONE.

BTW..don't I assume I agree with everything on that list ..I am stating if any candidate for any office believes in a single statement on that list .. the dems at the national level will do all they can to make sure the public sees that candidate as a wingnut.

Epa,
There you go have rational interior dialogue again. Making sense even beyond your own feelings is not allowed. IT IS NOT ALLOWED IN OBAMA'S AMERICA.

It's all about how you feel about Hope and Change.

Anyway, I thought about your post here. This point: The reality of the change and manifestation of the attempt at 'transformation' by Barack Obama seems to have scared the voters. The big issues at exit according to polls ..economy, real estate taxes.

I say: I don't really agree. I think the Maine turnout and voting down of Homosexual Marriage shows that for many it is a matter of Principal.

I think it works this way; Obama has instituted massive Change(tm) across America, and he has done so very fast. He hasn't actually gotten much of it passed (yet - fingers crossed), but the American people who bought the mantra "Change" didn't seem to believe he really meant it. So, they voted him in.

Now that they see that Obama really does want to fundamentally change America, they are reacting by having a national discourse on the meaning of America, it's Constitution, it's Tradition, it's founding principles.

I think this is causing an IDEOLOGICAL swing to the "Conservative" side. I don't think this is just a pragmatic swing.

Of course, for many people, it is. But, the Tea Party movement is an example of the Ideological swing.

It would be interesting to poll people at Tea Party rallies. I have a feeling that between 25-30% of those attending actually voted for Obama.

I could be wrong about that, of course. It's just a feeling.

Thing is, I don't know many people who didn't vote for Obama.
But, of course, that's just my myopic perspective.

Bummer, my ride to the Rifqa Rally had to bail out. That's what comes of trying to plan mid-week activities with people who are still working. (Having been one swerving-at-the-last-moment deer short of a road strke on Monday, I'm not enthused at the thought of driving across Pennsylvania half asleep in the middle of the night.
)

I wonder if the Maine vote on Gay Marriage could mean enough people actually started wondering about the legal ramifications of tinkering with the institution at that fundamental a level. Why would a specific legally protected designation for homosexual life partnership not be a more rational solution?

@rra -"Why would a specific legally protected designation for homosexual life partnership not be a more rational solution?"
Actually that ought to have been fine. But the real issues ought to be practical .. health insurance for partners as if they were spouses, ICU attendance for 'family' ... yadda.

Pasto ... let me see if I can find the youtube of the commercial the repealers ran .. it was a PERFECT move to inspire the idea that if gay marriage exists then the logical next step is to instill the idea in the young that mommy and mommy living together is identical to mommy and daddy SEXUALLY. This HAPPENED in Mass. FOR REAL. My wife and I who fall somewhere between adults ought be able to do whatever the f they want if they both consent, and marriage of adults ought be a civil right, saw this commercial and it scared the hell out of us. So what will it do to most people out there living in Norway, Maine, or Aurora who don't even want to see Sharon Stone kissing the other (unbelievably hot) chick ... or when contemplating Brokeback Mountain get the chills and want to run away? We can all SAY we believe people should be able to marry, but if the fallout touches the kids ... KISS IT GOODBYE.

Either way, it is SIGNIFICANT that 31 states ..every single one it has come to a vote of the citizens, gay marriage has been VOTED DOWN.

I'd say this is a dead issue except for self flagellating activists.

BTW we PASSED a medical maryjane system in Maine. We r going to have storefronts operated by the states and you can get a license for $5k and then you can bet they will tax the hell out of it.

Anyone coming downeast?

I say: You and I are definitely in agreement on this.
