Vladimir Putin, Russia's prime minister, promised on Thursday that Moscow would help Iran complete a civil nuclear power station by this summer, drawing criticism from Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state.
His remarks highlighted the continuing differences between the two powers over how to contain Iran's nuclear ambitions. Mrs Clinton was visiting Moscow on a trip partly designed to increase the pressure on Tehran by showing America's unity with Russia.
- The Obama administration is poised to ban offshore oil drilling on the outer continental shelf until 2012 or beyond. Meanwhile, Russia is making a bold strategic leap to begin drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. While the United States attempts to shift gears to alternative fuels to battle the purported evils of carbon emissions, Russia will erect oil derricks off the Cuban coast.

- Idaho took the lead in a growing, nationwide fight against health care overhaul Wednesday when its governor became the first to sign a measure requiring the state attorney general to sue the federal government if residents are forced to buy health insurance.
Similar legislation is pending in 37 other states.
A spokesman for Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R) said this afternoon that Virginia will file suit against the federal government if the Democratic health care reform bill is approved by the U.S. Congress.
Cuccinelli has long said he was examining the legal issues and suggested he would likely file suit. Brian Gottstein, a spokesman for the office, said this afternoon that a lawsuit is now a definite.- China's ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, says China believes the door of diplomacy is still open on finding a compromise over Iran's nuclear program.
And he says it's still not the time to talk about sanctions against Iran.

Saudi Foreign Minister Sa'ud Al-Faisal told the Saudi daily Al-Madina: "The foreign ministers in the committee have decided to give one last opportunity to the two sides, [namely] to the Americans, who are sponsoring the peace process, and to the Israelis. [This opportunity] will last four months, in an attempt to push the peace process forward. At the end of this period, if there is no progress in the peace process, and if Israel ignores the... the Arab peace initiative - which has been endorsed by all the Arab countries as a suitable basis for resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict - then the Arabs will adopt a suitable position."
All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.
