Islamophobic Hysteria Becomes Conventional Wisdom

THE ARAB SPRING

By Andrew C. McCarthy

Calling the Arab Spring "radical" once made us Islamophobes. Now even the New York Times agrees.

It’s been quite a week to be the author of The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America.
My book was well received by the public and generously reviewed by some of the conservative press. In what passes for the “mainstream” media, however, it was mostly ignored and otherwise panned as Islamophobic hysteria. This was because the book had two themes that were deeply unpopular:
1. Islamic supremacism is not a fringe ideology, but instead an entirely mainstream interpretation of Islam that is followed by hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide — the dominant Islam of the Middle East, and — whether a majority or a strong plurality — the dynamic Islam in the rest of the world today, including the West. Its chief proponents are the Saudi kingdom and the Muslim Brotherhood (Iran and its satellites compete with a Shiite version that is equally revolutionary, but there are vastly more Sunnis than Shiites). The Brotherhood rightly perceives itself as the intellectual vanguard of a global Islamic mass-movement with a ground-up strategy for Islamizing societies that prioritizes the implementation of sharia.
2. Islamists and Leftists are frequent collaborators. Though their disagreements are several and not trivial (e.g., women’s rights, gay rights, abortion), they are in harmony on basic, big-picture matters. Both ideologies are totalitarian in the sense of wanting centralized control of people’s lives, down to the small details; both elevate the good of the collective (or the ummah) over the individual; both are vigorously anti-capitalist (something most Americans still do not know about Islamist ideology); and neither can succeed in achieving its grand design without suppressing the liberties and self-determinism of the citizen.
On point 2, some objected to my use of the word sabotage in the subtitle. The word is not something I came up with, though. I was quoting an internal Muslim Brotherhoodmemorandum which described the Islamist mission in America as “eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within” by means of “sabotage” (to be precise, by “sabotaging” the “miserable house” that is “Western civilization”).
This concept of pretending one’s intentions are benign in order to bore into a society’s institutions and fundamentally to transform them from within mirrors the Alinsky-style community organizing favored by the hard Left. Given that Islamists admit (at least among themselves) that they are committing sabotage, and given their propensity to make common cause with Leftists who employ the same transform-from-within strategy, I do not think there is much merit in this objection to the word sabotage. Put a different way, I think the real objection is that I spotlighted something they would rather keep hidden.

Redistribute Air Conditioning?

Is this another possible application of "the right thing to do," Obama's justification for his recent order that ceases the deportation of certain illegal immigrants?

From this page in the New York Times, dated June 21, 2012:
Should Air-Conditioning Go Global, or Be Rationed Away?

Temperatures in New York City have pushed toward 100 degrees this week, and air-conditioners strained the power grid (thanks in part to stores with their doors open). Meanwhile the demand for coolant gases, especially in rapidly developing countries like India, threatens to accelerate global warming.

Is it a good goal for everyone in the world to have access to air-conditioning — like clean water or the Internet? Or is it an unsustainable luxury, which air-conditioned societies should be giving up or rationing?
More HERE, including the following:
...[T]here's little we can say until we end our own society's dependence on lavish cooling. Doing that would be a good start, but addressing energy-hungry technologies one at a time won't achieve the greenhouse-gas cuts of as much as 80 percent that science says are necessary to prevent catastrophic warming. Only a per-person ceiling on overall emissions can accomplish that.

NYT Reporter Reveals, President Obama Skips Arlington to Spend Memorial Day with Louis Farrakhan amidst Nation of Islam Thugs

It seem that what Pamela reported as an "Exclusive" turns out to have been a misread report which Byron York also has.

It seems, at this point, that Obama was not with Farrakhan.

Instead, Farrakhan lives across the street. And, that seems to be where he was.

How did the President of the United States spend his Memorial day weekend? Honoring the glorious dead? Not a chance.
He pow-wowed with race baiter, Jew-hater Louis Farrakhan, a frequent visitor to the White House. Back in March, Farrakhan blamed the Jews for O's woes.
“The Zionists are in control of Congress,” Farrakhan said  as he listed off a slew of Jewish economic advisers, adding that the “bloodsuckers of the poor” were rewarded with a bailout.
America is in trouble.

The story is amazing.

Here's just a bit:

We're outnumbered now by roughly a dozen Fruit of Islam agents for the Nation of Islam. As each casually dressed man arrives, he exchanges elaborate handshake/hug/double air-kisses with others. Two walked by your pooler chanting "Islam."

Go read the whole thing at Atlas Shrugs.

Put down the coffee. Remove all sharp objects and firearms from the room.

Doesn't ANYONE remember 9/11?

Clearly not this guy.

New York Crimes:

The Making of a Terrorist
By ROBERT WRIGHT

One fate the conservative commentator Daniel Pipes doesn’t have to worry about is drowning in conceptual complexity. He keeps his theories simple. His theory about why Faisal Shahzad tried to blow up a bomb in Times Square last week is “jihadi intent.”

Pipes writes dismissively of other explanations — that Shahzad is emotionally unstable, say, or that the bomb was payback for American military action in Pakistan. In Pipes’s universe, apparently, these explanations are rivals to the “jihadi intent” explanation, and couldn’t figure in an account of how Shahzad came to have jihadi intent in the first place.

Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic seems to agree that jihadism is a kind of prime mover of terrorism. After bloggers noted that Shahzad had lost his home to foreclosure, Goldberg rejected the idea that “the country’s financial crisis, and not, say, jihadist ideology, is at the root of Shahzad’s desire to commit murder in Times Square.”

I’d like to invite Pipes and Goldberg to imagine an alternative universe, a universe in which behaviors — such as planting a bomb — don’t have a single “root” cause. In this universe, bomb-planting behavior is kind of like the bombs themselves: a number of ingredients have to come together before things get explosive. If you figure out what those ingredients are, and which of them you can control, maybe you can make bomb-planting behavior less common.

In the universe I’m positing, the following scenario is conceivable:

A Pakistani guy moves to America, goes to college, gets a job, starts a family. He grows unhappy. Maybe he’s having financial problems (though I’m skeptical, for reasons outlined by Charles Lane here, that Shahzad’s home foreclosure actually signifies as much); or maybe the problem is just that he doesn’t find his social niche. And maybe he was a bit unstable to begin with — which would make it harder to find his niche and might intensify his reaction to not finding it.

Anyway, for whatever reason, he feels alienated in America. He stays in touch with people and events back home in Pakistan, and this gives him another reason to dislike America: American drones are firing missiles into Pakistan, sometimes killing women and children.

War-on-terror hawks need to seriously ask whether the policies they favor have created terrorists.

Thanks to the Internet, it doesn’t take him long to find like-minded folks, or to come under the influence of a radical imam operating out of Yemen. “Jihadi intent” is taking shape, and eventually he comes into the fold of actual jihadis, a faction of the Taliban in Pakistan. They give him what he hadn’t found in America: a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose. The basic ingredients of bomb-planting behavior are now in place.

I’m not sure this is the story of Faisal Shahzad; we don’t yet know enough to say. But this story is consistent with the facts disclosed about him so far — and, more to the point, stories like this do unfold in the world we inhabit. Various things fuel “jihadi intent,” and they may include the policy of firing missiles into Pakistan.

In fact, this policy does seem to have been part of Shahzad’s motivation. He reportedly told investigators he was upset about the drone strikes.

Obviously (I hope), to say that American policies may cause terrorism isn’t to say that America is to blame for terrorism. It’s just to say those policies may have downsides. And, obviously, those policies may have upsides as well; drone strikes disrupt terrorist logistics, for example.

Spelling out my reasons for thinking the downsides often outweigh the upsides is a subject for another column. For now my main point is that war-on-terror hawks need to confront the downsides, rather than act as if establishing the role of “jihadi intent” or “jihadist ideology” somehow ends the debate. They need to seriously ask whether the policies they favor have, while killing terrorists abroad, created terrorists both abroad and — more disturbingly — at home.

These possibly counterproductive hawkish policies go beyond drone strikes — a fact that is unwittingly underscored by the hawks themselves. They’re the first to highlight the role played by that imam in Yemen, Anwar al-Awlaki, in inspiring Shahzad and other terrorists. But look at the jihadist recruiting narrative al-Awlaki’s peddling. He says America is at war with Islam, and to make this case he recites the greatest hits of hawkish policy: the invasion of Iraq, the troop escalation in Afghanistan, drone strikes in Pakistan, etc.

All of these policies — not just the last of them — may have helped incite Shahzad. Back in 2004, a real estate agent recalls, he was oddly outspoken about his opposition to the Iraq war. And last year he asked his father for permission to fight Americans in Afghanistan. Only when denied that opportunity did he turn toward Times Square. (This is evidence against the theory that he was from early on a “plant” in America.)

So too with the two other high-profile terrorist attacks against America over the past year: the Fort Hood shooting and the would-be underwear bombing. Both perpetrators had found in hawkish policies cause to buy into the jihadi recruiting narrative.

Major Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, was enraged by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And the aspiring underwear bomber, before he became an aspiring underwear bomber, was giving glimpses of his inchoate “jihadi intent” as a student at University College London. There he sponsored a conference on the war on terror, and on the poster advertising the conference was a picture of a prisoner at Guantanamo — hooded, handcuffed and kneeling. A jihadist pinup, courtesy of Dick Cheney.

Unfortunately, President Obama isn’t discarding the Bush-Cheney playbook that has given jihadist recruiters such effective talking points. Quite the contrary: the White House thinks the moral of the Shahzad story may be that we should get more aggressive in Pakistan, possibly putting more boots on the ground. And already Obama has authorized the assassination of al-Awlaki.

Even leaving aside the constitutional questions (al-Awlaki is an American citizen), doesn’t Obama see what a gift the killing of this imam would be to his cause? Just ask the Romans how their anti-Jesus-movement strategy worked out. (And Jesus’s followers didn’t have their leader’s sermons saved in ready-to-go video and audio files; al-Awlaki’s resurrection would be vivid indeed.)

When you look at how much real-world evidence there is against the views of war-on-terror hawks, it’s not surprising that they would construct their own little universe, a place where “jihadi intent” is an uncaused cause, and our only hope is to kill or intimidate the people who, through some magical process that defies comprehension, have been possessed by it.

What is surprising is that Barack Obama, who became the Democratic nominee for president largely because he had opposed the Iraq war, seems increasingly to be taking his cues from the people who so disastrously supported it.

IT HAS BEGUN: NYTIMES TELLING ITS READERS THAT LESS HEALTHCARE IS BETTER HEALTHCARE

From the Astute Bloggers:
UPDATED: SCROLL DOWN...

THEY DON'T QUITE ENDORSE DEATH PANELS - YET, BUT BY ALL INDICATIONS THAT'S COMING NEXT YEAR IF THEY CAN HOLD ON TO THE CONGRESS:
Deep down, Americans tend to believe that more care is better care. We recoil from efforts to restrict care.

Managed care became loathed in the 1990s. The recent recommendation to reduce breast cancer screening set off a firestorm. On a personal level, anyone who has made a decision about his or her own care knows the nagging worry that comes from not choosing the most aggressive treatment.

This try-anything-and-everything instinct is ingrained in our culture, and it has some big benefits. But it also has big downsides, including the side effects and risks that come with unnecessary treatment. Consider that a recent study found that 15,000 people were projected to die eventually from the radiation they received from CT scans given in just a single year — and that there was “significant overuse” of such scans.

From an economic perspective, health reform will fail if we can’t sometimes push back against the try-anything instinct. The new agencies will be hounded by accusations of rationing, and Medicare’s long-term budget deficit will grow.

So figuring out how we can say no may be the single toughest and most important task facing the people who will be in charge of carrying out reform.

REPEAT:
So figuring out how we can say no may be the single toughest and most important task facing the people who will be in charge of carrying out reform.

"NO" IS ANOTHER WAY TO SAY "YOU DIE."

SO SARAH PALIN WAS RIGHT AFTER ALL.

OBAMACARE WASN'T JUST ABOUT WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION; IT WAS ABOUT A TYPE OF EUTHANASIA WHERE IT'S THE GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRATS WHO DECIDE WHICH PATIENT LIVES AND WHICH PATIENT DIES.

I SAY, WE'RE BETTER OFF IF WE "EUTHANIZE" OBAMACARE!

NOTE: The impetus to "reform" our health care industry and health care insurance markets is based on TWO HUGE FREAKIN' LIES:

1) That we spend more than Europe on health care and get a worse result.

And (2) That Europeans get better results disease by disease - also FALSE:

WHY HAS THE LEFT LIED ABOUT OUR HEALTH CARE?

TO GAIN CONTROL. TO MAKE AS MANY PEOPLE DEPENDENT ON GOVERNMENT AND POLITICIANS AND BUREAUCRATS AS POSSIBLE.

That's what makes them powerful - and able to dole out favors for friends.

There's only one way to stop them:

VOTE THEM OUT THIS NOVEMBER!

NYTIMES PUTS ITS ANTISEMITISM ON FULL DISPLAY - JUST IN TIME FOR PASSOVER!

From the Astute Bloggers:
IT'S QUITE A COLUMN BY REGULAR COLUMNIST ROGER COHEN:
  • COMPARING BIBI TO KHRUSHCHEV.
  • PRAISING ANDREW SULLIVAN.
  • PROMOTING - ONCE AGAIN - A FALSE MORAL EQUIVALENCE BETWEEN FATAH, HAMAS AND ISRAEL.
UNREAL:

It fell to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, to play the role Khrushchev once played in toughening a young American president.

The former Soviet leader thought he could browbeat Kennedy only to discover, in Vienna, that the Kennedy charm was not unalloyed to steel (“It will be a long, cold winter.”) Netanyahu was the first foreign leader to think he could steamroll Obama. He earned a frosty comeuppance.

The Israeli leader toyed with Obama’s unequivocal call in Cairo last June for a “stop” to Israeli settlements. He allowed the ill-timed announcement that 1,600 apartments for Jews will be built in East Jerusalem. Then, rather than scrap that, Netanyahu chose cheap cheers from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee with “Jerusalem is not a settlement.”

(I say cheap because everyone knows Jerusalem is not a settlement. That’s not the issue. The issue is that the Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem is rejected by the rest of the world and any peace agreement will involve an inventive deal on its status. To build is therefore to provoke.)

Obama was not amused. He airbrushed Netanyahu’s White House visit. The message was clear: The Middle East status quo does not serve the interests of the United States (or Israel). When Obama says “stop,” he does not mean “build a bit.”

Sometimes mistakes are needed. Through the law of unintended consequences they open new avenues.

So it is with the East Jerusalem housing fiasco. Nothing will happen in the Middle East unless the United States is seen as an honest broker able to criticize both sides when needed. Obama’s anger sped a needed clarification and freed debate.

As Andrew Sullivan has observed, a cultural shift is underway with respect to Israel: “The critics have been called ‘self-hating Jews’ if they are Jewish, or anti-Semites if they are not, but these barbs — once sufficient to end someone’s career — have failed to have an effect this time.”

Yes, indeed.

ANTI-ZIONIST LEFTIST SCUM LIKE COHEN AND SULLIVAN THINK THAT WHEN THE USA TREATS AN ALLY - ISRAEL - SHABBILY AND THE LEADERS OF FATAH WITH DEFERENCE THAT THIS IS BEING AN HONEST BROKER.

THAT SAYS IT ALL.

AFTER ALL: ISRAEL HAS BEEN BUILDING IN JERUSALEM SINCE 1968.

AND DURING BIDEN'S TRIP THE PA/FATAH DEDICATED A PUBLIC SQUARE TO A WOMAN WHO COMMITTED ONE OF THE WORST TERRORIST ATTACKS ON ISRAEL. AND NEITHER BIDEN OR OBAMA OR HILLARY SAID "BOO".

SO I GUESS THAT SILENCE ABOUT FATAH'S FAILURE TO LIVE UP TO OSLO IS OKAY TO THE OBAMA AND THE NYTIMES.

BUT IT'S WORSE:

OBAMA AND THE NYTIMES ALSO THINK THAT APPEASING JIHADIST SCUM CAN ACTUALLY LEAD TO PEACE.

THIS IA AN IDIOTIC POLICY WHICH MAKES US ALL LESS SAFE --- YES ALL OF US:

NOT JUST ISRAEL, BUT THE ENTIRE WEST - GIVING IN TO TERROR REWARDS THE TERRORISTS AND ENCOURAGES THEM TO DO MORE.

THIS IS NOT SURPRISING COMING FROM FOLKS WHO LEAKED SEVERAL CLASSIFIED SECRETS AND AN ADMINISTRATION WHICH INCLUDES PEOPLE WHO WROTE AMICUS BRIEFS FOR GITMO DETAINEES.

[NOTE: COHEN AND SULLIVAN ARE ANTISEMITES: WHEN YOU HOLD ISRAEL TO A SEPARATE STANDARD FROM ALL OTHER NATIONS IS IS - BY DEFINITION - ANTISEMTISM.]

NY Times Says Obama, Not Israel, Should Bomb Iran...Wait, The NY Times Said That?...

From Weasel Zippers:

Iranmissile1

Yes, they really did....

(NY Times)- PRESIDENT OBAMA should not lament but sigh in relief that Iran has rejected his nuclear deal, which was ill conceived from the start. Under the deal, which was formally offered through the United Nations, Iran was to surrender some 2,600 pounds of lightly enriched uranium (some three-quarters of its known stockpile) to Russia, and the next year get back a supply of uranium fuel sufficient to run its Tehran research reactor for three decades. The proposal did not require Iran to halt its enrichment program, despite several United Nations Security Council resolutions demanding such a moratorium.

Iran was thus to be rewarded with much-coveted reactor fuel despite violating international law. Within a year, or sooner in light of its expanding enrichment program, Iran would almost certainly have replenished and augmented its stockpile of enriched uranium, nullifying any ostensible nonproliferation benefit of the deal. .....The final question is, who should launch the air strikes? Israel has shown an eagerness to do so if Iran does not stop enriching uranium, and some hawks in Washington favor letting Israel do the dirty work to avoid fueling anti-Americanism in the Islamic world.

But there are three compelling reasons that the United States itself should carry out the bombings. First, the Pentagon’s weapons are better than Israel’s at destroying buried facilities. Second, unlike Israel’s relatively small air force, the United States military can discourage Iranian retaliation by threatening to expand the bombing campaign. (Yes, Israel could implicitly threaten nuclear counter-retaliation, but Iran might not perceive that as credible.) Finally, because the American military has global reach, air strikes against Iran would be a strong warning to other would-be proliferators

NYTIMES "NEWS ANALYSIS": BLAMES THE USA FOR ISLAMO-TERROR

From Reliapundit the Astute Blogger:

NYSLIMES "NEWS ANALYSIS":

Bruce Hoffman, who studies terrorism at Georgetown University, said the recent cases only confirmed that it was “myopic” to believe “we could insulate ourselves from the currents affecting young Muslims everywhere else.”

Like many other specialists, Mr. Hoffman pointed to the United States’ combat in Muslim lands as the only obvious spur to many of the recent cases, especially those with a Pakistani connection.

“The longer we’ve been in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said, “the more some susceptible young men are coming to believe that it’s their duty to take up arms to defend their fellow Muslims.”

THIS IS THE LEFTIST LINE:

  • WE MAKE MUSLIMS RADICAL.
  • IT'S NOT THE KORAN.
  • NOT MOHAMMED'S LIFE-STORY;
  • NOT THE HISTORY OF ISLAM.
  • IT'S US: OUR PRESENCE IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.

THIS OF COURSE CAN'T EXPLAIN THE MUSLIM TERRORISM IN PHILIPPINES, THAILAND, RUSSIA, ALGERIA, MOROCCO, SPAIN AND SO ON.

AND SO OF COURSE IT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT.

BUT THE NYTIMES "NEWS ANALYSIS" IS ACTUALLY EVEN MORE FEEBLE AND LEFTIST AND DISTORTED, FOR THIS BLINDNESS OCCURS EVEN THOUGH THE PREMISE OF THE ARTICLE IS THAT MUSLIMS IN THE USA ARE NOT IMMUNE FROM RADICALISM AND EXTREMISM.

AND THAT - GET THIS - THE NYXLIMES NOW USES FORT HOOD AS AN EXAMPLE OF BOTH THIS LACK OF IMMUNITY AND THE FACT THAT THE FACT THAT THE USA HAS TROOPS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN IS THE ROOT CAUSE.

IT UNBEFRICKINLIEVABLE THAT THE NYSLIMES WOULD NOW USE FORT HOOD AS AN EXAMPLE OF ISLAMO-TERROR EVEN THOUGH FOR WEEKS AFTER THE EVENT THEY DID THEIR BEST TO DENY IT.

WHAT ALLOWS THEM TO ADMIT THIS NOW?

THE FACT THAT THEY BLAME IT ON THE NEOCONS WHO GOT US INTO WAR IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.

THE LEFT HATES AMERICA MORE THAN ISLAMO-TERROR.

SCUM.

THE TRUTH IS THAT ISLAM IS INTRINSICALLY TERROR PRONE BECAUSE THE KORAN AND HADITHS ARE FILLED WITH PRESCRIPTIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR MUSLIMS TO COMMIT TERROR, AND THE LIFE OF MOHAMED - WHOSE LIFE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO EMULATE - WAS ONE FILLED WITH TERROR; MOHAMMAD WAS MUSLIM TERRORIST #1.

THIS IS THE REAL REASON MUSLIMS EVERYWHERE ARE PRONE TO RADICALIZATION: IT'S THEIR RELIGION.

NOT OUR ACTIONS OR REACTIONS.

BY BLAMING US THE NYSLIMES AND THE LEFT AIDS AND ABETS THE ENEMY.

THEY ARE TRAITORS TO THE USA AND THE WEST.
