Police arrest 31 at demonstration against Islamic fundamentalism

UPDATED AND BUMPED TO THE TOP FOR NOW (SCROLL DOWN TO SEE NEW POSTS)

From the Daily Mail:

More than 30 people were arrested today after disorder broke out during a demonstration billed as a protest against Islamic fundamentalism.

A total of 31 people were detained in Birmingham city centre during the event, which is believed to have been organised on social networking sites.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the arrests were made at various locations during the protest and a counter-demonstration organised by the Unite Against Fascism group.

The spokesman also confirmed that a car had been damaged during what she described as 'sporadic' outbreaks of disorder in the city centre.

Witnesses said scores of officers were involved in policing the rival protests, which had gathered near Birmingham's Bullring shopping complex.

One shopper, who declined to be named, said broken banners were left scattered on the ground outside the Bullring following the disorder.

Police had vowed to deal robustly with anyone acting outside the law at the protests.

Police believe the anti-fundamentalist rally was organised by groups calling themselves the English and Welsh Defence League and Casuals United, which is said to have emerged after British soldiers were abused by Islamic radicals at a homecoming parade in Luton.

Here's my question; who the hell is this "United Against Fascism" group?

What I see here is a bunch of young men, who appear to be mostly Middle Easter, beating up on a bunch of British people.

Are those people, whom I would presume are Muslims, the United Against Fascism group? Because, if they are, then they have proven that they are United For Fascism, not against fascism.

The article doesn't tell you who was arrested, but the pictures are worth a thousand words.

BBC News Report
BBC states:

"Another counter-protest in the city centre was organised by Unite Against Fascism, West Midlands Police said. "

and

""It started off with a group of white guys who were chanting 'England, England'. I thought they were just football fans, but then a larger group of black and Asian people turned up and it all kicked off.

Youths dragged a Union flag from a man's hands
"You had people burning the Union flag. People were being kicked - some of them weren't anything to do with the protests.

"It all seemed to be very systematic - groups were arriving in cars and getting involved in the violence.

"It really wasn't nice to see and I hope I never see it again."
Asked about the latest demonstrations, Supt Ward said the police wanted to balance the rights of protesters with retailers and shoppers who wanted to use the city centre for their normal business. "

Here's a video report of the incident:

siddy 06 "yeah people were saying it might turn into a low level form of bradford riots. the counter demonstrators are turning up earlier than the EDF so might help them for a bit like giving leaflets etc if they are doing that. at least it is instilling some sort of passion in young people to stick up for their religion and identify with it.

depending on their intentions & methods, you could say they are following sunnah to SOME extent - "whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith." (Muslim) depends on the context etc, but the EDF have been witnessed saying the most insulting things about Islam, Allah, the Prophet SAW, so i don't think people should be pacified into thinking that they shouldn't bother to oppose them."

Anonymous,
Thanks for the Harry's Place post.

I read it. And, I commented on it in Harry's thread.

I don't understand Harry's perspective. I hope he will answer me.

United Against Fascism sounds like a great group, according to what I read at their web site.

But, the people who are beating the British men up in the streets are fascists themselves, so which is it?

1) United Against Fascists are fascists themselves,

or

2) those hoodlums have nothing to do with United Against Fascists?

Which is it?

Pastorius - From what I read on a variety of blogs, the "Unite against fascists" name is as accurate as Islam means peace.

That's what it looks like to me.

Look, I'm not on the ground in the UK, so what do I know, but Harry's Place seems to be off on this. I don't get it.

What does he expect to happen. You've got a country there were 40% of young Muslims want Sharia law instated in the UK. What does he think? Does he think that means they can be dealt with reasonably? For God's sake.

Really? It sounds like an obvious Islamist-apologist front group to me. When fascism comes to Britain, it will surely come in the guise of anti-fascism.

Jeppo,
You sure do love to argue with me.

If you read the rest of my comments in this thread (all of which came before yours), you will see that I don't buy the "anti-fascist" label.

Give me a break, dude.

:)

Nobody is surprised, I think. The lefties are self-delusional as always.

Reading a variety of msm reports, it sounds as if hearing the protesters sing "God Save the Queen", chant "England, England" and waving the British standard was enough to disabuse community cohesion in Birmingham.

Yet another islamic web board was well aware of plans for this protest and the discussion reveals the following - Islamicboard.com

The_Prince "i saw one very nice pic of one of the anti-Islamic protester getting a very niceeeeeeeeeeeeeee lesson from the other group. what a nice sight."

&

"these idiots were chanting muslim bombers off our streets, obviously their trying to provoke and showing their against Muslims as a whole, why not say extremists off our streets. and last i checked there are no muslim bombers on the streets of england!"

Mental deficiencies abound in Islam - and here we have a clear diagnosis of amnesia. 7/11?

Continue from blog:

aadil77: "who were the 'black' people that came with the asians, were they muslims?somalis?"

Guestfellow: If they came with the Muslims,it is very likely they would be Somalis. I just saw the video. Salama Yaqoob was protesting. o_o"

Gossamer skye: "wouldn't it have been amusing if a 'Muslim bomber' had shown up and made their wishes come true?
isn't that what people do when they chant? to invoke something to happen?
what a bunch of nits"

Ar-RaYYan: hmm i wonder if br Adam11 and his counter-protest group came? and did some of the things he said they were going to do? Quote:
assalamu alaykom brothers and sisters,

I assume you've heard of this counter-protest:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=9991532179

I have spoken to many Muslim youth. A group of them are planning to come in England shirts and shout ENGLAND ENGLAND back at the fascists, and then do a mass prayer right in front of them. There will most likely be a white British Muslim revert leading them on the megaphone.

that would have been pretty cool
"

Wonder if the police monitored these chat rooms as diligently as they monitored the protesters?

We ought to be monitored because we posted something from the Daily Mail?
