Yeah, I love that footage too.
You're right. I don't think he made any money on his music.
I think Don did make a lot of money, the last 10-15 years of his life, selling his paintings. I could be wrong.

That painting looks kinda like a Steely Dan album cover.
If that is representative of his work I've no doubt he didn't hurt for buyers.
Unfortunately (or otherwise) I lost track of his career after he hung up his microphone.
