While the simplest explanation would be in trying to silence him by any means, why would they be stupidly transparent given the attention this is causing around the world?
The only semi-plausible reason would be to provoke a nationalist backlash so the government has the excuse it needs to openly crack down on dissent by declaring martial law and use this as an excuse to also try and overturn Brexit, keeping the UK forever tied to the EU.

I had a hunch that something like this was going to happen. As far as the UK authorities are concerned, Tommy Robinson must be silenced.

Another thing to consider would be the EU's attempt to break the internet by voting on article 13 in the 20th June about a week from now or less and the licence it would give the authoritarian establishments to control (and manipulate) the flow of information, which is relevant in the case of the UK towards Tommy Robinson.
