I took his comments as figurative/metaphorical. And you know I do not countenance threats against our politicians, regardless of rank or affiliation.

By saying that, he is implying that he would take up arms against the Obama Administration, or against Obama directly.
This is tantamount to Sedition, if not a call for an outright assassination.
How about if I said this to you,

How you feel about Barack Obama has nothing to do with whether this statement is a threat against the President or not.
Being familiar with Ted Nugents style, the dead of prison comment has to do with the government trying to dispose of his Second Amendment rights.
Even if it doesn't, it's still quite a stretch to take that as a threat against The Man Child himself.
How I feel about the precedent has nothing to do with my comments true thrust.
I find myself disagreeing with people who I normally agree with.
However, that does not deter me.

Thing is, as with everything, this will play out, and it will come to light whether I am right or not.

Actually my quik interpretation of Nugent's remarks was that in defending the 2nd amendment ..WHEN IT WAS REVOKED IN FXN BY EXECUTIVE DECREE he would be imprisoned or shot dead.

I believe that Ted was referring to what would be done to him in the case of a second term, not Obama. I remember during the Clintonoid era when Clinton was in Chicago for a parade a man who was a spectator called him a traitor. That man was arrested & put in jail according to the t.v. news cast. So much for freedom of speech even that long ago.

Pastorius, you're wrong on a number of counts. First, you said it will "come to light" whether you're right or not. No, it's a matter of opinion whether Nugent's statement is objectionable or not. Second, you say it's clearly a threat; in fact just looking at his actual words, they are ambiguous and subject to varying interpretations. Of course, his intention is what matters, so when he talks to the secret service he can explain what he meant. Next, you say nobody supports EDL or VB; I do. In general, I disagree with stifling speech in order to avoid "things" coming to a head. Let's hear people's opinions on Obama. Or do we want the debate to be between the left and the castrated opposition like the McCain of 2008? We need to hear about the mortal threat these people pose to our republic. Diana West just wrote about this. Saying (in vague and ambiguous terms) that Obama wants to take people's guns is sedition? Obama's program is seditious! We have a socialist in the white house whose life goal is to undo the constitutional order and remake the USA in the image of the wildest dreams of all 1970s and 1980s community-activist college professors. And the reason for that is, our society tolerates far too much of this type of behavior. The precedent is already set. The left was producing plays and movies about murdering President Bush. There were threats against Bush on every street corner.

You are correct in saying that whether I am right or not will not come to light with time. This is a matter of opinion. Even if Nugent were clearly guilty by the letter of the law (and I think he is) it is still a matter for the court of public opinion to decide whether people like me, who think he is guilty, are right or wrong.
And, the court of public opinion is used to threats against the President.
What I should have said (I did not think out my meaning well, and wrote the wrong thing) is that I believe this statement by Nugent will be used against Republicans, and it will come to be viewed as the beginning of the end of the Romney campaign.
Nugent has imperiled all of us with his irresponsible behavior. He believes he is being brave, but instead he has given our enemy of a President reason to, once again, change the dialogue. Nugent, and people like him, need to be muzzled and removed from the presence of Mitt Romney. (As I said, Nugent really ought to be in jail, but it's clear no one else has the stomach for following this law, so hey, let's plunge on into further lawlessness - that's always a good thing, right?).
History, as it unfolds, will show whether I am right or wrong on this count. Maybe the public is a lot smarter than I give them credit for. Maybe the public at large will wake up and say, "Barack Obama is using false issues to attack Republicans. Why would I vote for a candidate who doesn't talk about real issues." But that same public elected Barack Obama in the first place, so I don't hold a lot of hope for reason to win the day. Instead, I think it is necessary for Mitt Romney to win by attacking and playing it very above the board. No cheap games behind the scenes. No reaching out to questionable people for support.

Why is Nugent's kill-happy ilk even allowed to own guns? Those who gloat the most over weapons seem the least suited to own them, when you consider all the mayhem they cause.
