It's funny you bring up the Doors with regards to Kerry, because I have always thought his public speaking style (especially during his Presidential campaign) was an imitation of Jim Morrison. Think of his voice as he intoned, "I'm John Kerry, and I'm reporting for duty."
Now, think Jim Morrison, "All hail the American night."
