The Democrats have argued that the "real reason" they favor a "public option" (really government insurance - really a FANNIE MAE for health insurance) is that it is merely a way to create more competition within the health insurance industry.
Now that the public option is virtually dead, many Democrats have turned to the coop-option.
(The fact is that the public option is a Trojan horse for single payer and the co-op option is merely a Trojan horse for the public option.)
The frighteningly socialistic request made by Waxman for the earnings of all health insurance industry executives is not just a lightly veiled threat against private enterprise, it's a direct assault.
Waxman wants the info so he can use it as propaganda: he is trying to make the insurance companies look like evil greedy people who enrich themselves at the suffering of everyone else. This is the classic Huey Long / Mussolini populist approach.
But even if we were to believe the Democrats when they say they just want to increase competition would we have to do it their way?
Are either co-ops or government insurance the best way?
NOPE. Not by a long shot.
In fact, there is an easier way and a cheaper way to increase competition - just allow insurance companies to offer any type f plan they want and offer it across state lines.
Since there is no barrier to entry into the business, the insurers which develop and run the best plans - and have to lowest overheads - will get the most people to sign up, to buy their stock and to share in their profits.

We don't need government groceries to make the food industry competitive or government shoes stores or government clothing stores or government hair salons.
So we certainly don't need government health insurance.
The government cant run cash for clunkers or medicare or Medicaid or social security without running them into the ground - only to be bailed out by the taxpayer.
Government health insurance would dwarf all of those failures.
We must do whatever needs to be done to stop it.
Collectivists like Obama and Waxman are a clear and grave and present danger to our nation.
They must be stopped.
