Muslims in veils are like 'American Negroes' who supported slavery, French minister says

A French minister for women's rights is under fire for what critics describe as a doubly offensive comparison of Muslim women who wear head coverings to American slaves who she said supported their own subjugation. 

In a Wednesday interview on the TV channel BFM, Laurence Rossignol criticized clothing companies such as H&M, Uniqlo and Dolce & Gabbana for offering products catered to Muslim women who partially cover their heads, faces, feet or hands, according to the France24 news channel. 

The interviewer then noted that some Muslim women wear such clothing by choice. "Of course there are women who choose it," Rossignol replied. "There were American Negroes who were in favor of slavery." 

The comments immediately elicited a forceful reaction on French social media over both the use of the word "Negroes" and the suggestion that Muslim women who wear such clothing embrace the curtailing of their rights, according to the BBC. 

The word Rossignol used to refer to black American slaves is particularly incendiary, even in French, which offers less-offensive alternatives. Rossignol initially defended her use of the word "Negroes." 

Although she later described it as a mistake, she refused to walk back her comments about the Islamic clothing. 

"The word Negro is a pejorative word that is now only used in order to evoke slavery in reference to the abolitionist work of Montesquieu, 'On the Enslavement of Negroes,' " she told BuzzFeed France, referring to the Enlightenment philosopher. 

"There is thus no provocation on my part, nor any desire to shock. It's a word that I would not use in any other circumstance. I underestimated that the reference was not clear."

Al-Khansa, the all-female Islamic State (IS) brigade, have arrested and punished 15 women in Mosul.

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official from Mosul Saed Mamuzini told BasNews that al-Khansa arrested the 15 women for failing to wear the niqab.

They were arrested on Sunday in the Salamiya neighborhood of Mosul.

Mamuzini said al-Khansa militants disfigured the women by pouring acid on their faces.

“They have implemented this punishment so that other women in the city will never consider removing or not wearing the niqab,” he said.

Last month members of IS executed a number of women by stoning. They were accused of adultery.

It's "Hijab Day" at a California Public School in the Capitol City of Sacramento

A Jihad Watch reader in the Sacramento area has sent me this flier (click to enlarge), showing that today is NP3 Hijab Day at NP3 High School. NP3 stands for Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep; the school is in the Natomas Unified School District in Sacramento. 

This all started with a student at NP3 High who is an intern for the Hamas-linked terror organization the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). This student gave a presentation about Islamophobia and Islam at what was a mandatory staff meeting that also included an official CAIR representative. 

The school then now decided to sponsor an official “Hijab Day” in cooperation with Hamas-linked CAIR. The flier also shows that another Muslim Brotherhood-linked organization, the Muslim Students Association, is also involved. 

Every female member of the faculty and staff, and students as well, has been encouraged to wear a hijab today. NP3’s principal, Tom Rutten, has been strongly encouraging everyone to participate and wear one. 

Please contact Tom Rutten and let him know, politely and courteously, that there are religion-and-state issues involved here, and also that public schools should not be working with groups that have demonstrable and proven links to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. 

Also ask him when is NP3 Priest Collar and Nun Habit Day, and when is NP3 Kippah Day — or is it only Islam that gets this treatment? 

Ask him when is NP3’s day to honor women and girls who have been brutalized and murdered for not wearing hijab. 

Ask him why he is celebrating a garment that is, for all too many women, a sign of oppression and misogyny.

First lady Michelle Obama faced backlash from Twitter users in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for not wearing a head covering during her brief visit there with the president. 

Obama wore loose-fitting clothes including a long blue jacket and dark pants while accompanying President Barack Obama during their four hours on the ground in Riyadh to offer condolences on the death of King Abdullah and for the president to meet with new King Salman. 

On Twitter, Saudis used a hashtag that translates to “#Michelle_Obama_Immodest” or “#Michelle_Obama_NotVeiled” to chastise the first lady for being disrespectful to Saudi traditions. 

Saudi Arabia has a strict dress code for women, who are instructed to wear black robes and head coverings at all times in public, though visitors to the country are not required to abide by the dress code. In 2011, when then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Abdullah in New York, she did not cover her face or hair. 

Nor did then-first lady Laura Bush during a 2006 visit with Abdullah in Saudi Arabia.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS - A 27-year-old local Muslim woman is filing a lawsuit against the Dearborn Heights Police department for forcing her to remove her hijab when she was arrested and booked for a traffic misdemeanor offense on July 9, 2014. 

Malak Kazan said she was humiliated by the department’s policy, which required her to remove her scarf when she was detained for driving on a suspended license. 

As part of the booking process, Kazan was asked to remove her hihab for her mug shot. Kazan allegedly expressed concern about the policy to the police men on duty, claiming it was a violation of her religion. 

She allegedly asked for a female police officer, but was told they couldn’t provide her with one. After growing frustration, Kazan was able to speak to a supervisor, who told her that removing head wear was part of the department’s policy and that she needed to comply or she would be further detained. 

Local Attorney Amir Makled from the Law Office of Cyril C. Hall, is filing the case at the U.S. District Court this week. He is demanding the department change its policy and is also seeking both compensatory and punitive damages for his client.

Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi supported the Iranian revolution only to have it end her career as a judge. It was a pivotal moment in Iran’s turbulent transition and one she remembers well. Towards the end of that first year, the Khomeinist revolutionaries went after two objectives at once as they consolidated their power: the imposition of mandatory hejab for women, and the sharp curtailment of their rights to participate in society as equal citizens.

One day Ebadi arrived at the Ministry of Justice to congratulate the revolutionary officials who had taken power. But instead of thanking her for standing with the revolution, the provisional minister asked her to cover her hair, “out of respect for the return of our beloved Imam Khomeini.”

In her account of those days, Ebadi writes, “the head-scarf ‘invitation’ was the first warning that this revolution might eat its sisters.” Within days the same authorities demoted her to secretary of the court she had presided over, saying that women were “constantly distracted,” “disorganized” and “unmotivated.” The aim was to control what women could do, the professional heights they could reach, and the state chose a means that women would feel against their skin every single moment they stepped out their front doors: the hejab.

Hijab and burka-wearing Muslim women are putting their health at risk because they do not get enough sunlight, doctors have warned.

An alarming number of Muslim women who wear headdresses such as the hijab, which covers the head, neck and shoulders, and the burka, which covers everything except the eyes, are suffering from bone deficiencies due to lack of vitamin D.

Most of the body’s vitamin D, which helps calcium absorption and prevents the bone disorder rickets, is obtained through sunlight acting on the skin. Only a very small amount comes from food.

Women with darker skin are most at risk because it takes their bodies longer to produce the vitamin.

The NHS wants to encourage women from communities that embrace the hijab, such as those from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Somalia, to increase their vitamin D intake.

A Department for Health spokesman said: ‘For ethnic groups there is an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Studies have shown low levels in Asian women in the United Kingdom – particularly among those who cover most of their skin for cultural reasons.’...

“After our friendship grew over the past few years, we began to watch movies together and have a few drinks while we did so.” They said one evening, with their children at Sumaira’s parents’ home, the two decided to watch a pornographic film together. They didn’t really know what to expect, they said.  

“We were just watching and the first scene we saw were two women having sex. They looked so into each other. That’s when it happened,” Razan admitted, turning her head slightly away in apparent embarrassment. 

The two said that they decided to emulate the women on the film, stripping naked and indulging in each other. It was a spur of the moment act, they both admitted, but since then have been having sexual escapades together.  

“Just having someone who cares about each other, our bodies and what we want is loving enough. I couldn’t imagine living here and being treated the way I do without her,” Razan said, gripping her lover’s hand.

Islamic hardliners recently protested against the US singer, and managed to prevent her Indonesian concert from going ahead, by threatening to bring “chaos” if she performed. 

Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) chairman Cholil Ridwan said that he believed the Lady Gaga concert was part of a plan, “intended to destroy the nation’s morality.” 

Lady Gaga wore the pink, see-through burkha when she opened for milliner Philip Treacy, known for his avante garde designs that cater to the world’s fashionistas.

JERUSALEM - It's the latest prescription for extreme ultra-Orthodox Jewish men who shun contact with the opposite sex: Glasses that blur their vision, so they don't have to see women they consider to be immodestly dressed. 

In an effort to maintain their strictly devout lifestyle, the ultra-Orthodox have separated the sexes on buses, sidewalks and other public spaces in their neighbourhoods. Their interpretation of Jewish law forbids contact between men and women who are not married. 

Walls in their neighbourhoods feature signs exhorting women to wear closed-necked, long-sleeved blouses and long skirts. Extremists have accosted women they consider to have flouted the code. 

Now they're trying to keep them out of clear sight altogether. 

The ultra-Orthodox community's unofficial "modesty patrols" are selling glasses with special blur-inducing stickers on their lenses. The glasses provide clear vision for up to a few meters so as not to impede movement, but anything beyond that gets blurry — including women. It's not known how many have been sold. 

For men forced to venture outside their insular communities, hoods and shields that block peripheral vision are also being offered. 

The glasses are going for the "modest" price of $6.

Something pretty important has come to my attention that probably should be discussed among Muslims. The sun. Admittedly, the sun is pretty central in our existence in this world. It has been found that most Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, which is obtained in its natural form from sunshine. Medical science has found that people who are deficient in Vitamin D are more likely to become ill – in the long run, with cancer. In a way, humans are like plants. We will wilt, wither away, and eventually die without attention to certain physical things like adequate sunshine, water, exercise and of course nutrition. 

The Muslim community has been very strict and frowning upon those who drink alcohol or smoke. But many public functions feature soda in  place of water. After low levels of sunshine, a high level of sugar in the blood is the second top cause of cancer. Soda in fact actually dehydrates you as it contains salt (sodium). Drinking soda is like drinking sea water in terms of how it replenishes you. It does not.

But getting back to the sunshine issue, how can Muslim women who wear hijab prevent themselves from wilting away from lack of Vitamin D? Fair women need to apply sunscreen to their faces to prevent redness, moles and brown blotches. Some husbands are so “sensitive,” they won’t even let their wives go out wearing sandals. It may be necessary for Islamic scholars to convene to discuss this issue that is causing widespread death in our community, which is the lack of sunshine, whether it’s because of too much computer use or because of women having nowhere to go outside in privacy.

The interview was made by a Spanish newspaper to her husband, who says she has wore a burqa all her life. When the photographer took her photo, Sumaya didn't utter a word.

Q: Does your wife like her life in Navarra? What is the kind of life she leads here?

A: (He is silent) She is religious. She likes very much to read the Koran. We go to the mosque. I have brothers here who come to help. She is with me.

A: The burka has small holes. The air can enter through them. For example, if we are in the country alone, she goes behind and discovers herself.

Q: Can she go out alone?

A: (He doubts for a few seconds.) If she wants to buy something, of course she can, but must be accompanied by her husband, father or son when she travels. The husband is the one who orders here. We are those who bring money home. In our religion we all have our work. And our women are to be at home. They have to explain to our children the religion. So we leave our wives at home.
