From The Rebel:
This is one of those stories that is far more important than one might think just glancing at the headline. Freedom of speech itself was crafted to allow for the criticism, and even ridicule, of political and religious authority.
Once either of those becomes above criticism, then not just freedom of speech is crushed, but freedom itself is heading for the exit.
Nazih Khatatba, editor-in-chief of the Mississauga-based Meshwar newspaper, revealed that “people affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood movement and Islamic political organizations” have recently carried out a personal smearing campaign against him that included “pressures, incitement and distortion of facts.”
In his editorial (Meshwar, Issue 165, September 16, 2016, p. 5), Khatatba said that he was slammed over posting an article entitled “The journey of Zoroaster on the back of a horse to the heavens.”
Even though the article has nothing to do with Islam and Mohammad, Khatatba, a Palestinian-born Muslim, was accused of implicitly insulting Islam and Muslims.
Insulting Islam and/ or Mohammad is one of the major sins in Islam.
Said Rageah, Imam and an instructor for the AlMaghrib Institute (Toronto), implicitly justified the death penalty for apostates and those who insult the prophets.
Montreal Imam Ahmed Kandilsaid that “those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger… be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides.”
