This is all true for me and my family.My parents were really old when they had me—mid-40s. Old enough that they were teenagers during The Great Depression.

My parents were also teens in the Depression.
My parent's stories were the same as those of Cynical Publius.
I will add this:
I have been unemployed twice. Once for six months. And another time for about 6 weeks. I did not go on unemployment either time.

I have a picture of five (of six) of us kids sleeping in one bed. Yes, we were all small, and the first three of us born practically right on top of each other - but it was part of our life. We ate a lot of oatmeal too. No SNAP benefits to buy fast food. One pound of hamburger for eight people. Yep.
