People making over $450k can certainly afford to pay more in taxes. Of course the question really is, where was that money the govt is now going get (waste to some appreciable %) headed instead?
Gucci?
Two weeks in Virgin Gorda?
Or new equipment for their business?
Or investment in fracking?
Or are they now going to remove support from business in order to KEEP GOING to Gucci?
Who knows?
Having been in medical device development, I can tell you, plan on fewer devices. 3.8% fewer devices. Big deal? Only if that gap would have aided you or someone you care for, I suppose.
But,frankly, without control of the increasing debt, none of this makes the slightest difference by degree of seriousness.
There is only one thing to look for now.
The debt ceiling. If the republicans RAISE THAT CEILING without REDUCING THE DEBT PROPER (not reducing the rate of increase in the debt), then there will be no republican party. It will be a rump self identified so called ‘centrist’ party with no centering principle other than votes which will help incumbents remaining in office.
I have devoted much thought to whether or not the Republican should act in a way which garners votes, or act in a way which adheres to principle.
They have no choice. If the republicans want to act in a patriotic manner they have to adhere to the idea and then get voted out if that is the majority choice. We all know that the course we are on is not sustainable. We are over fishing the Grand Banks of reality.
When the deluge comes, then the republicans will have served the USA.
Perhaps there will be SEVERAL 1964’s before this bill comes due. Perhaps it will come due in a non obvious manner (a military defeat due to lack of enough or modern equipment). Perhaps it will come due when we cannot act in our own defense overseas. Perhaps we will see allies abandon us. Perhaps we will see some foreign ”McDonald’s” of some other nation enter and dominate culturally. Perhaps to stay afloat, Social Security will actually have be cut by 20%, or inflation will reach beyond that number.
If the republican party does not LEAD, and instead is a partner with democrats in the process which ends as described above, there will be turmoil in every city and town in the USA. VIOLENT TURMOIL as people will not be able to survive.
If the republicans lead, and are seen to be wiling to get CREAMED at the polls to maintain their ideals, people will have somewhere to turn.
And they will.
In seven years the interest on the debt will be 33% of the entire national budget today.
If you spent one third of all you made just to pay the interest on what you had to borrow each month, and each month you borrowed MORE AND MORE to pay your bills, could you sleep at night?
So, guess what?
It’s YOUR BILL we’re talking about.

Something has to give. If we don’t grow, we have to cut BONE, not fat.

As I have watched the goings-on of the past 7 years (beginning with George Bush bringing in James Baker for foreign policy advice, culminating in a policy of negotiating with the Taliban and Iran for an exit strategy - continuing through the "Stimulus" sinkhole - then the election of Obama, the shady "Obamacare" backroom deals, the celebrating feting of illegal immigrantsetc. etc. etc.) I have started to believe the worst conspiracies theories about our government.
Whether I will go wholeheartedly into that wicked world of idiotic thought or not, I am now convinced that I no longer live in America.
This nation we live in is a fucking joke. And, I consider all those who vote for these policies and support them to be personal enemies of mine.
It is not easy to go through life believing one is surrounded by enemies. Indeed, some of these enemies of my friends and family members. But they are enemies in the same way those Germans who supported the Nazi regime were the enemies of those Germans who knew the Nazi regime to be evil.
Here's what I mean: It's not just a matter of my friends and family members being mistaken. It is a matter of them not having any ability to apprehend the truth. Indeed, they are willingly going at full speed in full flight from reality.
This means they are truly dangerous people, who may turn on me at any time.
I can no longer trust them with my life.
The gun issue is one of the issues over which I fully expected some of my friends and family members WHO ARE MY ENEMIES to turn on me.

The converse is true; that is, those who voted for BHO view those of us who didn't as their mortal enemies.
I see it in my long-time neighbor's eyes. He is acting like one possessed -- to hell with anyone who disagrees with him.
The thing is, AOW, if they consider me their enemy, then I had better wise up and understand that they are my enemy.
And beyond that, if you can not trust someone with your life ON A PERSONAL FREEDOM ISSUE, in other words, if you believe they would turn you in over a fundamental freedom (protected by our Constitution) then they are your enemy.
Or, at least, I consider them to be MY enemy.

I'm fortunate that I have a close, although small, circle who are awake. Like you, I am concerned about those still stuck in their normalcy bias who refuse to see what is right in front of their faces. They will be the truly dangerous - the enemy who is disguised as friend.
I may be a total fool, but I believe that setting aside the true hard left individuals, most of what you, Pastorius, consider "your enemies" are useful idiots, idealist fools who grew up with the "white man complex" and who will be the first to be surprised and horrified when the situation explodes in their faces. I also have them among my friends and family (close family ...)
Fortunately, or unfortunately, this is an extremely rich country, and will take a very long time to bleed out. In the meantime, the fools will never understand what hit them.
For years now I have been seeing indicators that this country will follow in the failing path another rich country was led into, been bled by leaches all the way down, for the last 60 years; I refer to Argentina. It's a miracle that country is still afloat, well sort of ... And when people feel they have touched bottom, there are still a few more steps to go down ... And believe me, people still look at each other and as: What happened? How did we get here? My answer: populist policies!
My hope is that our idiots, the North American ones, will react in time. The press is the one that should react first, but there again, we have been manipulated.
I've always laughed at conspiracy theories, but now I'm convinced that the people behind this "sudden" cataclysmic downfall of the country are the same behind the NWO, who are also the same behind the eugenics of the '20s and '30's (even though states like VA continued the practice until the '70s.) These are truly nefarious individuals ... And loaded beyond belief ... which makes them extremely dangerous, and effective!

But that is not what makes them enemies.
What makes them my enemy is my understanding that when the chips fall, they will turn people like you and I in to the authorities, not for crimes, but for living our lives according to the Constitution of the United States.
I have seen the end here in California, where all my leftie friends have stood with cops who beat a homeless man to death. That is a human rights violation. So, you could reasonably ask, why are the lefties standing with the cops? We thought lefties were against the "pigs", right?
No, now that the cops line up at the union feeding trough along with all the other leftist piggies, the lefties love them.
I don't buy that it will take along time to bleed out.
The people who work to achieve the inner professional excellence that drove people to become rich, and or reach the penultimate of recognition, or inner satisfaction will become 3 or 4% 'discouraged' that hard work, effort and ingenuity will achieve their dreams.
That's all it will take. The result will be an across the board collapse. Like an over leveraged housing market, expectations of earnings, tax revenues, stock performance, military prowess, ... COLLAPSE.
Not chaos, but a shock so deep and profound, that counterrevolution will be a very popular voting pattern, and we MAY SEE regional break up.
Atlas may already been shrugging.
If so, get ready for the domino effect to proceed rapidly. Let's say by June 2013.
