Claim- Iran IEDs capable of destroying U.S. tanks blamed for many U.S. casualties

Neo con inspired over inflation to justify a new war, or cynical reality?

Iran has manufactured improvised explosive devices capable of destroying U.S. main battle tanks.

Officials said Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has overseen the development and distribution of advanced shape-charge IEDs capable of penetrating the most protected of U.S.-origin armor vehicles. The latest Iranian weapons, termed Explosive Formed Projectiles, have been responsible for many U.S. casualties in Iraq.

"I think the principal area where we have seen evidence of Iranian involvement is in providing these EFPs, these very powerful IEDs, to the — either or both the technology and the weapons themselves that have been killing American soldiers," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.

This is a complete SCIENCE. The idea is that the force of the explosion creates a spall (fragment or chip) composed of the armor of the vehicle itself which enters the vehicle at unbelievable velocity wreaking havoc, shredding occupants and then possibly blowing it up as a result of the rather unpleasant things stored inside tanks. This occurs because the explosion s focused by shaping the charge and backing it. The better the armor, the bigger the charge. BTW, focused explosive lenses is EXACTLY how, with the timing of klystron detonators one would detonate a plutonium bomb.

Officials said Iran has distributed EFPs to both Shi'ite and Sunni insurgents in Iraq. The weapons are powerful enough to destroy the U.S.-origin M1A2 MBT.

"I've been told when I was out there that they can take out an Abrams tank," Gates told a Pentagon briefing on Feb. 2.

Gates said the U.S. military has sought to stop the flow of EFPs from Iran to Iraq. The military has provided the Bush administration with serial numbers and technology to build a case against Iran.

Officials said IED attacks by Al Qaida and other insurgents far outnumber EFP operations against U.S. forces. Gates said IEDs account for about 70 percent of U.S. casualties.

"My impression is that the percentage of IED attacks that involve these Explosively Foreign Projectiles is a relatively small percentage of the overall number of attacks, but they are far more lethal," Gates said.

The term "IED" originated last year with an incompetent CNN reporter.

"IED" suggests a home-made, hodgepodge of explosives and nut, bolts, etc. The explosive devices employed in Iraq are factory manufactured, Iranian CLAYMORE mines.....in use for over 100 years by the world's military forces. The US Military intercepted truckloads of these professionally manufactured devices clearly labeled as "Made in the Islamic Republic of Iran" over three years ago.

The use of the term "IED" suggests a poorly trained, rag-tag group of committed "Freedom fighters"..which is pure bullshit. The devices in Iraq have been planted by highly trained, professional soldiers in the Army of the Islamic Nation.

We are fighting a well organised, well equipped, highly motivated, professional enemy...with logistical support that is far superior to ours.

The Islamic enemy are not "Freedom Fighters"....We are. Their armament is very similar to our own....and neither army is utilising MacGiver devices.

CNN and others who use the term "IED" are misleading the American public, and attempting to demoralize our military.

Does it matter what picture we paint with our words and descriptions?

Yes it does.

Anyone who does the slightest amount of research into EFP's cannot come to ANY other conclusion, Mike.

Iran is a protected haven for indigenous Iraqi killers, a protected haven for professional armorers, a protected haven for professional smugglers, a protected haven for agents of a foreign govt, a protected haven for professional killers and assassins, a protected haven for terror masters, and a protected haven professors of terror and their grad school instructors.

As long as Iran remains inviolate, the best outcome we can hope for is either perpetual warfare in Iraq as a means to resist and bleed the mullahs, or a partition of that nation.
