President Obama "Furious" to Hear of Plane Incident

A White House official tells ABC News that President Obama was "furious" to hear about the incident this morning when Air Force One and Air Force fighter jets appeared to be flying into the Manhattan skyline, scaring many New Yorkers into thinking they were about to face another terrorist attack.

Many buildings in lower Manhattan evacuated. Angry New York politicians lashed out at whoever was responsible for the incident -- which turned out to have been for a photo op.

An explanation was forthcoming in a mea culpa statement issued from the White House.

“Last week, I approved a mission over New York," Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office, said. "I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”

When President Obama was told about the incident, he was "furious," a White House official says.

Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.

"It didn't sound like a fun meeting," the White House official says.

from NBC New York:

Jumbo Jet, F-16 Buzz Lady Liberty, Put New York on Edge

It wasn't an attack, or even a drill -- it was a government sponsored photo op.

The Pentagon did tell local authorities about the startling fly-over that sent a Boeing 747 and a F-16 fighter screaming over New York's scarred skyline, but officials said they couldn't share the information with the public. They couldn't even share the information with the mayor.

Mayor Bloomberg said he was "furious" and criticized both the feds and his own administration for failing to issue a simple warning to the public in a city that is still somewhat traumatized by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"The good news is it was nothing more than an inconsiderate, badly conceived and insensitive photo op with the taxpayers' money," Bloomberg said.

"It's completely asinine after 9/11 to do that," said Keith Mercantine, who witnessed the chaos in Jersey City. "I saw ambulances out here with pregnant women."

An Air Force One lookalike and F-16 buzzed the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor in the morning, halting work on nearby construction sites, causing resident and office workers to flee their high-rises and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey a major fright.

At least two people were treated for minor injuries at Jersey City Medical Center after falling during the rush to exit their buildings.

"Everybody panicked," said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. "Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I'm devastated...Everybody was running, we didn't know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again."

The Air Force One lookalike is a back up plane for the one used by the president. The plane is designated by the Defense Department as a VC-25 but is recognizable to the public as a Boeing 747.

The Federal Aviation Administration said there was no reason for alarm, even though thousands of people saw the fighter jets circle the statue, along with a VC-25, and immediately thought the worst.

Air Force One, F-16 Fly Over Lower Manhattan

"They were making two, maybe three passes," FAA spokesman Jim Peters told News 4 New York. "The [Department of Defense] and the FAA worked this all out in advance."

A Pentagon official confirmed that while the Presidential Airlift Group, which is based out of Andrews Air Force Base, did inform the FAA and New York City officials about this morning's aerial photo op, they also told both agencies not to inform the public about it.The NYPD confirmed that statement.

Louis Caldera, Director of the White House Military Office took the blame for the photo-op flap.

“Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," said Caldera. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”

This just in: Obama was angry because Air Force One didn't have the Star and Crescent logo he had ordered.

!?%&!!# idiot Caldera and the DoD pulling a stunt like that what the hell were they thinking...

If it was just a "photo op" and not even a training drill that makes it even worse. Those drills are real impressive even when you know what's going on. But over lower Manhattan? You can see how terrifying it was. When they ran one out of Logan a couple years ago it was announced beforehand all over tv which is the least they should've done for this one.

But even if they had made a public announcement beforehand it would have been insensitive at that location. To just spring it on everyone at the harbor end of town like that was inexcusable.

Obama's lucky Giuliani wasn't still mayor...

Obama creating a false flag. Next time AF1 gets near NYC, the people will not react. Then, the Secret Service on Soros' payroll will head straight at the Empire State Building and BAM! No more DOW/NASDAQ. Just what Soros/Obama/Geitner/Emmanual want.

Watching the vids it really does look more like some idiot "photo op" than a training mission. For one thing, in a real one the fighter jets are much closer to the plane. And the 747 was going much slower than the 9/11 planes and was even lower! Just compare this footage with any from that day. Those poor people. It must have been absolutely terrifying.

Obama has made some of the worst hires for White House Staff since the Nixon Administration. I am sure some nincompoop thought it would be cute to buzz the 9/11 site. How ridiculously insensitive of them to do that.

Barrie Hussein knew about this flyover. He did not realize the panic it may have caused. A scapegoat will be produced and all will be fine in the world. The Obama has spoken.

Actually I think the most interesting view of Obama's purported reaction is WHO he is pissed at...americans (maybe dumb ones, but americans) who cannot harm us or him.

Too bad he hasn't reserved some of that for those who actually CAN HARM US, and mean to... AND SHOWN IT.

Has anyone explained specifically what this "aerial photo op" with Air Force One and an F-16 flying low over lower Manhattan landmarks was to be used for? Clearly our recently elected narcissist in chief along with Pentagon officials all approved it for some reason. I, for one, have a real curiosity about the related project such an 'aerial photo op' was necessary. It certainly didn't come cheaply - during a time of financial crisis.

They were updating their file photos, is the official explanation

This wouldn't have happened under Bush.
