...A haven of stability in a region of tumult, Dubai is usually a place people flee to, not from. Foreigners, lured by what President Obama in a June speech in Cairo hailed as the "astonishing progress" of this autocratic but vibrant Persian Gulf metropolis, account for more than 90 percent of the population, and 99 percent of private-sector workers.

But a severe economic slump has reversed the flow. Those who came to Dubai seeking fortunes in property, banking and luxury goodies for the rich now face a less alluring prospect -- a prison cell or furtive flight. Only a tiny minority has been picked up by police but, says a longtime foreign resident who runs a company here, "It's all a bit scary. They are looking for people to carry the can." The foreign resident, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, said a British neighbor was picked up last year.

The turbulence is a blow to a place that promoted itself as the Middle East's answer to Hong Kong or Singapore. It is also a setback for Washington, which has for years touted Dubai as a model of a modern, prosperous Muslim land that, though far from democratic, seemed anchored in the rule of law and committed to basic rights.

Among those who have been locked up are a JPMorgan investment banker; American, British and other foreign property developers; a German yachtmaker; and two Australians who worked as senior executives of what was to be the world's largest waterfront development. The gigantic project had been launched by Nakheel, the crisis-battered property arm of Dubai World and builder of Dubai's signature palm-tree-shaped resort islands.

A few have been convicted, mostly for bouncing checks. Those still awaiting trial often waited many months in jail before being charged: The two Australians, for instance, were arrested in January, held in solitary confinement for seven weeks and then finally charged, with fraud-related offences, last month, said their Melbourne lawyer, Martin Amad.

A banker who headed JPMorgan's Dubai office and its Islamic banking business was first jailed in June last year but was charged, also in connection with fraud, only this spring. JPMorgan said the alleged crimes do not relate to his work at the bank, which he joined in 2007 and quit in April this year while in detention.

Some have complained through lawyers of being deprived of sleep, denied food for days and routinely menaced. "We will insert needles into your nose again and again," a security officer can be heard telling Jaubert, the spy turned submarine-maker, on an audio recording, which the Frenchman said was made on his cellphone during an interrogation before he fled. "Do you know how painful it is to have needles put inside your nose repeatedly and then twisted around? Do you think you can resist this kind of pain?"

Jaubert said the interrogation was conducted by two men in long white robes in a bare, windowless room on April 22, 2007, at Dubai's Al Muraggabat Police Station. On the recording, the interrogators described themselves as state security officers, with one warning Jaubert that "we are above the police, we are above the judges. We can keep here you forever."

Dubai's Media Affairs Office said the emirate "prides itself on a well-established system of law and order and judicial fairness."...

Europe leans right as voters choose EU Parliament

BRUSSELS – Europe was leaning to the right Sunday as tens of millions of people voted in European Parliament elections, withconservative parties favored in many countries amid a global economic crisis.

Opinion polls showed right-leaning governments edging the opposition in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and elsewhere. Conservative opposition parties were tied or ahead in Britain, Spain and some smaller countries.

Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands and five other EU nations cast ballots in the last three days, while the rest of the 27-nation bloc voted Sunday. Results for most countries were expected later in the day.

The EU parliament has evolved over five decades from a consultative legislature to one with the power to vote on or amend two-thirds of all EU laws. It has 736 seats and lawmakers serve for five-year terms.

With most votes counted in Austria, the main rightist party was gaining strongly while the Social Democrats, the main party in the governing coalition, lost substantial ground.

The big winner was the rightist Freedom Party, which more than doubled its strength over the 2004 elections to 13 percent of the vote. It campaigned on an anti-Islam platform, with posters proclaiming "The Occident in Christian hands" and describing Sunday as "the day of reckoning."

In the Netherlands, exit polls predicted Geert Wilders' anti-Islamic party would win more than 15 percent of the country's votes, bruising a ruling alliance of Conservatives and Socialists.

For many, the Europe-wide elections were most important as a snapshot of national political sentiment. High unemployment across Europe has increased voter dissatisfaction with mainstream national parties, and skepticism over the EU's power to help spur economic recovery.

Polls predicted record low turnout and small but symbolically important gains for far-right groups and other fringe parties.

"It shows how divided the center-left forces are at the moment. Normally sitting governments are punished at European elections," said Jackie Davis, an analyst at the European Policy Centre in Brussels.

Groups like the all-white British National Party could use their EU parliament seats as a platform for their far-right views but were not expected to affect the assembly's increasingly influential lawmaking on issues ranging from climate change to cell-phone roaming charges.

The parliament can also amend the EU budget — euro120 billion ($170 billion) this year — and approves candidates for the European Commission, the EU administration and the board of the European Central Bank.

Still, many voters consider European Parliament members — who earn euro7,665 ($10,430) a month — to be overpaid, remote and irrelevant.

Polls ahead of Sunday's vote showed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratsleading the center-left Social Democrats in Germany, which holds national elections in September. Merkel hopes to form a center-right government after the national vote with the pro-business Free Democrats.

Voters in Germany are more concerned about the costs of financial intervention than the commitment to job preservation favored by the Social Democrats, said Tanja A. Boerzel, a political scientist at Berlin's Free University.

"The crisis hasn't affected Germany like it has the USA. Most Germans aren't struggling as much," she said.

In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative UMP party has steadily held the lead in polls, with theSocialist Party second.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi's Freedom People's Party held a two-digit lead over his main center-left rival in the most recent polling despite a deep recession and a scandal over allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old model.

In Britain, dissident Labour legislators said a plot to oust Prime Minister Gordon Brown could accelerate after the party's expected dismal results in the European elections are announced.

Opponents say the Labour leader has been so tainted by the economic crisis and a scandal over lawmakers' expenses that the opposition Conservatives are virtually guaranteed to win the next national election, which must be called by June 2010.

Polls favored left-leaning parties in some countries, such as Greece and Portugal.

In Spain, where the recession has driven unemployment to 17.4 percent, Europe's highest, a close race was expected between the ruling Socialists and the conservative opposition.

Poland's governing pro-business Civic Platform party was expected to claim around half of the country's 50 seats, followed by the conservative nationalist Law and Justice party — a shift to the right for Poland at the European parliament.

In Hungary, where the governing Socialist Party raised taxes and cut social programs in a deep financial crisis, the main center-right opposition party, Fidesz, was slated to win at least 15 of 22 seats. Jobbik, a far-right party accused by critics of racism and anti-Semitism, was expected to win one or two.

In Sweden, the Green Party was expected to increase its support dramatically. The Pirate Party, which advocates shortening the duration of copyright protection and allowing noncommercial file-sharing between individuals, was expected to get one or two seats for the first time.

Romanian police set up checkpoints around the country after widespread allegations of voting fraud. Officials said parties were offering voters from 50-100 lei (euros 12-24, $17-$34) to vote in several towns.

March 11th bombings

Today the sentence to all the 28 accused of the bombings has been read.

The first thing I have to say is that I am perplexed, really surprised by the result. And that's why I'm surprised Zapatero is so happy about the sentence (or so he has said).

Three persons were considered as "masterminds" of the attacks: Mohammed the Egiptian (acquitted entirely), Youssef Belhadj (12 years for belonging to terrorist gang) and Hassan el Haski (15 years for being leader of a terrorist gang). None of them is considered to have taken part in the bombings.

Then Spanish schizophrenic and minor criminal Trashorras is considered as someone whose cooperation was needed for the bombings and is condemned to nearly 40.000 years in prison. Strickinly, he is, then, considered as an author of the bombings, according to Spanish penal code.

Only Jamal Zougam and Otman el Gnaoui are considered as "Jihadi" authors of the massacre and are condemned to the same amount of years as Trashorras.

Another stricking thing: Trashorras cousin's Toro, who was accused of being a police collaborator, has been acquitted, when it was nearly considered as the "clever" of the family and with direct implication in the traffic of explosives.

ETA, the Iraqi war and Bin Laden are not related with the bombings. But the sentence says:

Among the proved facts, the resolution underlines that these groups, "using the violence in any of its sides, pretend to destroy democratic regimes and eliminate the Christian-Western culture to substitute them with an Islamic State under the empire of the Islamic Law in its more radical, extreme and minoritary interpretation".

Well, the theory can be more or less well summarised. But how can we consider this as a Jihadi attack (according only to the sentence), when one out of three authors is non-Muslim, schizofrenic and haschich consumer with no relation with Jihadi networks and the three more important guys are acquitted of the massacre?

The rest of the people condemned are not authors nor collaborators of the massacre. They are condemned of belonging to terrorist Jihadi networks with no connection with the bombings, and of other minor crimes (falsification of public documents or having explosives).

It's curious to underline that, while Socialist Zapatero and Communist Llamazares have praised the sentence, the victims are all not very happy with it. The Spanish "Cindy Sheehan", Pilar Manjón, who has blamed directly Aznar and Bush of the bombings and has said the victims were killed because they were "workers" and not rich people "who go on their cars to work", has said she is appealing the sentence. Others have considered it to be very soft with the criminals.

But there are some problems: there is no data as to what the explosive was (there were no proofs...). Nothing about who was the leader. Nor even about who inspired the bombings. And only three people of all who were initially charged with the bombings did everything.

I don't think this sentence has solutioned anything. For me it has complicated it even more.

(Just in case: Schizophrenia, from the Greek roots schizein (σχίζειν, "to split") and phrēn, phren- (φρήν, φρεν-, "mind"), is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental illness characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, most commonly manifesting as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions or disorganized speech and thinking in the context of significant social or occupational dysfunction. Do you really believe a man like that can be an author of a planned massacre like this? I do not).

Cozying Up

Excerpt from this article in the October 17, 2007 edition of the Washington Times (emphases mine):

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday warned against a U.S. military strike against Iran and invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to make a precedent-setting visit to Moscow — dealing another blow to U.S. hopes of isolating the regime in Tehran.

Mr. Putin issued the invitation on the sidelines of a summit in Tehran of the five nations bordering the Caspian Sea.

His trip to the Iranian capital was the first by a Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin visited there in 1943 to participate in an Allied conference to plan for a postwar world.

In a final declaration, the Caspian nations backed Mr. Putin's call, saying "under no circumstances will they allow [the use of their] territories by third countries to launch aggression or other military action against any of the member states."

The participants also backed the rights of signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty — which includes Iran — to develop peaceful nuclear energy....

Putin has said there is no evidence that Iran's nuclear program has a military dimension, but the Kremlin nonetheless has delayed construction of a nuclear power plant in Iran, ostensibly because of a financial dispute. Many analysts here say the Kremlin was angered by Iran's unwillingness to accept a Russian proposal to enrich uranium, on Russian soil, for Iran's needs.

Putin refused to say if the plant could begin operation before he leaves office next year.

"I only gave promises to my mom when I was a small boy," Putin told Iranian reporters. "At the same time, we are not going to renounce our obligations."

Ahmadinejad and the mullahs of Iran have their own agenda. Putin has his as well. Where will this Russia-Iran alliance lead the rest of the world? It seems to me that the world just became a more dangerous place.

Ahmadinejad: "Give the lands of Canada and Alaska to the Zionists to create a country for themselves"

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president, has vowed that his state and others would continue resistance until "all of Palestine is liberated" from Israel.

The Iranian leader on Friday was making the speech to mark al-Quds (Jerusalem) Day, a day of protest against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Tens of thousands marched through the streets of Tehran in support of Palestinians, chanting "Death to Israel" for al-Quds Day, observed annually on the last Friday of Ramadan.

"The Palestinian people are standing firm. The Iranian people and other peoples will not stop until all of Palestinian territory is liberated," Ahmadinejad said in a speech broadcast on state radio to mark the day.

"They [world powers] should not think that the Iranian nation and other nations in the region will take off their hands off the throat of the Zionists and their supporters."

Controversy

Ahmadinejad provoked an international outcry shortly after his election in 2005 when he quoted Ayatollah Khomeini as saying the "regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time", widely mistranslated in the international media as "Israel must be wiped from the map".

In his speech at Tehran university on Friday, the president also repeated his controversial questioning of the Holocaust, and what it had to do with Palestinians.

"The Iranian nation hates killing and considers Hitler and the executioners of the World War II as black and dark figures," he said. "But the Iranian nation has a question and as long as there is no clear and reasonable response to this question, it will remain." [The Iranian nation or you? Ahmmiiiiiii... ]

Ahmadinejad said "Zionists" should move to empty lands in Europe or North America and out of the Middle East entirely.

"Europeans cannot tolerate the Zionists in their region and country, but they want to impose them on the people of the region ... Give these vast lands of Canada and Alaska to them to create a country for themselves."

He added that "Iran is no longer willing to discuss its undeniable right to nuclear energy" - and he described the nuclear programme as a great victory for Iran.
At the same time, Iran is again accused of supplying weapons to the Talibans, this time it is roadside bombs.

US Army General Dan McNeill, the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, said that the discovery of more than 50 roadside bombs and timers in lorries crossing the border from Iran last month proves that Iran’s Quds Revolutionary Guards are actively supporting the Taliban.

The allegation will add to fears that the escalating war of words between Iran and the West could end in armed conflict between the two.

British special forces, believed to be from the Special Boat Service, played a prominent role in tracking and intercepting two lorries that crossed from Iran into Afghanistan’s Farah Province on Sept 5.

At the same time, Iran has signed a billion dollar gas deal with Syria.

Al Qaeda calls for "the cleaning of the Islamic Maghreb of the sons of France and Spain" and the recovery of Al-Andalus

So three years after the shameful retreat from Iraq, Al-Zawahiri calls for

"the cleaning of the Islamic Maghreb of the sons of France and Spain". " The recovery of Al Andalus is a duty of the umma (Islamic nation) in general and for you in particular", demanded the Egyptian terrorist to the inhabitants of the Maghreb region.

as he did before.

While police detained two Pakistanis, accused of financing international Islamic terrorism nets, Zapatero says that "the menacing message from Al-Qaeda is not new". Yeah, that's true. But you assured every Spanish citizen that Al-Qaeda was interested in attacking Spain because we were in Iraq. Now we aren't. So what are we going to do now? What and who are we going to cave in this time....

Till now, the menaces were adressed mainly to the Americans. How can we explain that Al-Qaida targets now the Franch and Spanish in the Maghreb?

I don't know if there is a profound reason for this. All that we can say is that both French and Spanish people are very numerous in the region, specially in Morocco and Tunis, somewhat less in Algeria. It is true that some tourists come here for that not very recommendable sexual tourism. There are other behaviours which can be considered as ostentatious by the local population. And the people I have spoken with from Morocco have told me of a similar situation. For the fundamentalists, some practices made by the Europeans are perceived as a true provocation against Muslim lands. I think that the Islamists play that card with some categories of the population. Al Qaida is using that dimension.

See?? It's not the Islamist the ones who are the culprits. It's the Europeans who go there provoking the fundamentalists.... 

But not only Spain and France are targeted (or their citizens in the Maghreb). Pakistan and Sudan's Darfur region also are.

Russian Muslims vs. Orthodox Church

Oopssssssssss, the seeds planted by Orthodox Patriarc Alexis weren't fruitless. After defending the Iranian-Russian relationship as a way to build a new multipolar world and stating that "it is only adherents to traditional religions, first of all the Orthodox and Muslims, who can give 'an appropriate response to the challenges of the time", now the Orthodox Church is confronting a new challenge by ... Muslims.

The Government wants to introduce a new optional subject about Orthodox culture. The no. 2 of the Orthodox Church, Kirill, has said that "In URSS there were a lot of people who was taught atheism. They were professional atheists. This people did not disappear. As there are also ultraliberals. But the overwhelming majority of the Russian people is backing this new subject".

But the religious Muslim authorities have united themselves with the laicists, to prevent the introduction of this subject in the Russian teaching system. The VP of the Russian Muftis' Council  has accused the Orthodox Chruch of "clericalising" the Russian society. One of the most known teologians of the Russian Orthodox Chruch, Father Andrei Kurayev, has proposed the expulsion of the Mufti to the Gulf Persian States, where they practise the secularism that he likes so much.

2nd Bin Laden's video

The latest videotape, of the hijacker’s testament, had not yet been posted on extremist web sites. But IntelCenter, a monitoring group in suburban Washington, said it had obtained the 47-minute video and provided it to Associated Press Television News.

In the tape, bin Laden praised al-Shehri, saying he “recognized the truth” that Arab rulers were “vassals” of the West and had “abandoned the balance of (Islamic) revelation.”

“It is true that this young man was little in years, but the faith in his heart was big,” he said.

“So there is a huge difference between the path of the kings, presidents and hypocritical Ulama (Islamic scholars) and the path of these noble young men,” like al-Shehri, bin Laden said. “The formers’ lot is to spoil and enjoy themselves whereas the latters’ lot is to destroy themselves for Allah’s Word to be Supreme.”

“It remains for us to do our part. So I tell every young man among the youth of Islam: It is your duty to join the caravan (of martyrs) until the sufficiency is complete and the march to aid the High and Omnipotent continues,” he said.

More on the German plot

According to today's report in German news, the plotters had orders to act on September 15th (that is, after everybody would be calm, saying, well, on September 11st, nothing has happened..).

Also the German police is worried about the characteristics of the plotters, as two of them are white converts. Guenther Bernstein, Interior Minister, said on Tuesday “Germans converting to Islam should be watched because they tend to show particular fanaticism in order to prove worthy of their new religion,”. (This is not new: the guards watching non-converts in the Middle Ages in Islamic prisons, were normally converts, who were specially cruel with them).

Specially dedicated to all those who are everyday groaning about Governments' intercepting communications, US intercepted key data related to the plot in Pakistan. Also Germany used sophisticated eavesdropping equipment for months till they were able to detain the suspects.

"Radical changes" announced to EU policy...

about EU neighbours:

Addressing a conference that included ministers from the 16 neighbour countries and the 27 EU members, European Commission Vice President Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the Commission proposes to open up the European markets to workers, services and goods from the EU’s neighbours.

The invasion will be totally achieved if this is accepted. Even if they claim they will support "better legal immigration", considering these past years surge in illegal immigration and the lack of measures to control it, I just don't like this. Don't like this at all.

China hacking foreign Governments' computers (+)

I know that China is not the first and main objective of this blog, but nevertheless these news are fairly important to let them pass away.

Some weeks ago, German Government informed that the computers of several of their Ministries had been hacked by Chinese Army.

Two days ago, US Pentagon informed that their systems had also being hacked from China.

China denies hacking Pentagon’s computers but there are several worrying things. I copy some paragraphs of the link, you can read it entirely:

“Some people make groundless accusations against China” that its military attacked the Pentagon, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regular news briefing.

“China has all along been opposed to and forbids criminal activities undermining computer networks, including hacking,” she said. “China is ready to strengthen cooperation with other countries, including the U.S., in countering Internet crimes.”

The Financial Times report said the Pentagon was still investigating how much information was stolen, but cited an unnamed person as saying that most of it was probably unclassified.

[…] The Pentagon warned earlier this year that China’s army is emphasizing hacking as an offensive weapon. It cited Chinese military exercises in 2005 that included hacking “primarily in first strikes against enemy networks.”

The Associated Press reported in July that the State Department was trying to recover from large-scale network break-ins affecting operations worldwide. The hackers appeared to target the department headquarters and offices dealing with China and North Korea, it was reported.

However, experts have said that China is home to a large number of insecure computers and networks that hackers in other countries could use to disguise their locations and launch attacks.

Well, it’s a good way to disguise an attack from other people, such as terrorists… BUT for China is a golden oportunity: not only they can claim they are innocent, but they can do it and blame others! AND they have been trained for that…

Also UK has complained because the caring and loving and peaceful Taliban are using Chinese-made weapons. This is the most laughable line in all the article: The authorities in Beijing have promised to carry out an investigation. Bet they will say they are sold without permission?

And a reader of my blog, Debbie, has also told me that UK has also complained about Chinese hackers on their computers:

Chinese attackers have launched online assaults against the network at Britain's Parliament and the Foreign Office, The Guardian said, citing unnamed government officials. It added that some of the hackers were believed to be from the Chinese military, without citing sources.

The British government refused to comment on the claim. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence referred questions to the Foreign Office, and a spokesperson there said he would not comment on security matters.

The South Korean hostages

I have gone through the news about the release of the 20 South Korean hostages who had been kidnapped by Talibans in Afghanistan. It's said that the South Korean Government has paid around $20 million that -a Taliban speaker has announced- will be used for buying more weapons and to carry suicide attacks.

They have also expressed their satisfaction about the way the kidnapping has resulted and announced they will carry more of them in the future against citizens who are nationals of countries which have troops in the country.

There are also reports that say that the women were sexualy assaulted by the Talibans and that all hostages were beaten when they rejected to convert to Islam.

Talibans' use of teenagers

An interesting reading subject about the Talibans:

Never mind that they don’t even allow street signs with the little symbolic walk or don’t walk figures with heads on them, here’s a video/photo show of the pretty boys of the Taliban. Black eye-liner and hand-holding and pretty long hair are evident in the photos, although homosexual behavior is strictly banned. The Taliban actually turn young boys into sex slaves. Here’s an excerpt from an article on that from Jamie Glazov from :

But there is a curious rule that the Western media has typically ignored. Rule No. 19 instructs that Taliban fighters must not take young boys without facial hair into their private quarters.

[…] Rule No. 19 obviously indicates that the sexual abuse of young boys is a prevalent and institutionalized phenomenon among the Taliban and that, for one reason or another, its widespread practice has become a problem.

The fact that Taliban militants’ spare time involves sodomizing young boys should by no means be any kind of surprise or eyebrow raiser. That a mass pathology such as this occurs in a culture which demonizes the female and her sexuality — and puts her out of mind and sight — is only to be expected. To be sure, it is a simple given that the religious male fanatic who flies into a violent rage even at the thought of an exposed woman’s ankle will also be, in some other dysfunctional and dark secret compartment of his fractured life, the person who leads some poor helpless young boy into his private chambers.It is no surprise that John Racy, a psychiatrist with much experience in Arab societies, has noted that homosexuality is “extremely common” in many parts of the Arab world. [1] Indeed, even though homosexuality is officially despised in this culture and strictly prohibited and punishable by imprisonment, incarceration and/or death, having sex with boys or effeminate men is actually a social norm. Males serve as available substitutes for unavailable women. The key is this: the male who does the penetrating is not considered to be homosexual or emasculated any more than if he were to have sex with his wife, while the male who is penetrated is emasculated. The boy, however, is not considered to be emasculated since he is not yet considered to be a man. A man who has sex with boys is simply doing what many men (especially unmarried ones) do. [2] And this reality is connected to the fact that, as scholar Bruce Dunne has demonstrated, sex in Islamic-Arab societies is not about mutuality between partners, but about the adult male’s achievement of pleasure through violent domination. [3]

Hypocrisy… hmm, a word these men have not known about…, eh???

The Indonesian summit asking for a Global Caliphate and Spain

I have written a long post about the Indonesian summit, held by 100.000 Hibz ut-Tahrir supporters and the consequences it could bring for the West and specifically for Spain.

There are several things that worry me really: the secret recruitment, the selection of the recruits between educated middle-class and their support of terrorism. Yes, I know that they say they are not violent, but they support terrorism both in Palestine and in Iraq, saying it's the Jihad.

Of course, they reject Western democracy, but support a democracy with religious values, although they support the Caliphate. They also pretend as a final goal, the conversion of all the world to Islam.

The language will provide protection against the sorts of harassment lawsuits filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) after several unidentified individuals reported six Muslim imams engaged in suspicious – and frightening – behavior prior to boarding a USAir flight in November 2006. CAIR has been identified as a front organization for the Muslim Brotherhood and is an un-indicted co-conspirator in an alleged terrorism-financing plot.
