Largely Unreported: Christians Slaughtered In Nigeria Over The Weekend

On Saturday, a slaughter of Black Africans in 15 villages of Nigeria took place, but that news could not find space in any major newspaper or TV network other than the Daily Express in the U.K.

Could this self-imposed censorship be because it was a Black on Black crime? Or was it because the murderous killers were Fulani Muslims while the victims of the massacre were from villages of Nigeria’s Christian minority?

In the spirit of Black History Month and all the awareness-raising efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement, perhaps some attention could be paid to the Black lives lost in Nigeria and their stories lost in the news.

According to the Express, “armed men stormed through 15 villages to massacre Christians and destroy their churches in a violent crackdown against the [Christian] religion in Nigeria … Dozens of people have been killed after the gangs ransacked towns and villages to clear them of all aspects of the Christian faith.”

The Dutch-based Christian charity Open Doors described the broad daylight attack as being carried out by a group of Muslim Fulani who are traditional cattle herdsmen. “One attack took place in broad daylight, as people were about to go to church. The assailants chased and killed the villagers and burned down nine churches and many more houses,” their spokesman added....

Does the ‘Ummah’ (the broader Muslim community) recognize the crimes against humanity being committed by our fellow Muslims, be it in Nigeria or Iran? Or will we put on the charade of victimhood, demanding pity while we cover up in a burka of deceit, like with the genocides in Darfur, Kurdistan, Papua New Guinea and Balochistan?

They stormed this town in Yobe state, northern Nigeria like a swarm of bees, and at the end of their four-hour rampage, some 150 people had been killed – at least 130 of them Christians, according to church sources.

Hundreds of people are still missing, and the destruction included the bombing of at least 10 church buildings.

More than 200 members of the Islamic extremist Boko Haram sect stormed the Yobe state capital, Damaturu, at 5 p.m. on Nov. 4...

The Christian leaders in Damaturu told Compass that out of the 150 casualties reported in the Yobe attacks, more than 130 were Christians. When the Muslim extremists went to New Jerusalem, they said, any Christian they met who could not recite the Islamic creed was instantly shot and killed or slaughtered like a lamb.

The Rev. Idris Garba, the 41-year-old chairman of the Yobe state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), told Compass the attack “is a Jihad against the church.”

“When Boko Haram members and other Muslims here attacked us on that 4th of November, it was like the end had come for Christians in this settlement,” Garba said....

Odinga signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shiekh Abdullah Abdi, chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum of Kenya, to impose sharia should Odinga's violent campaign succeed.

Nigeria to screen preachers after unrest

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) – State governors in northern Nigeria have set up a committee to regulate the activities of religious preachers in a bid to avoid further unrest in the mainly-Muslim region.

The Northern Governors Forum, comprising 19 governors, met in the city of Kaduna late Monday to discuss last week's uprising by an Islamist sect and a subsequent military crackdown which claimed more than 800 lives.

"This forum has resolved to constitute a preaching board that will screen and approve competent Muslim and Christian clergy for evangelical activities," Niger state governor Babanginda Aliyu said.

"Islam means peace and we will therefore not condone any group of people who hide under its canopy to foment trouble and senseless killings in its name," he told reporters.

Nigeria's 140 million population is divided between Muslims, mainly in the north, and Christians, in the south, and 12 of the 36 states adopted Sharia law in 2000.

The Boko Haram sect began a five-day uprising on July 26 over the adoption of Sharia law across the nation.

The governors condemned the uprising which they said affected five northern states, although violence had only been previously reported in four.

"The Forum condemns in totality the sectarian activities of the religious sect called Boko Haram which caused mayhem in the states of Borno, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina and Kano," he added.

Aliyu said the governors would empower traditional chiefs in the region to effectively monitor the activities of religious groups in their areas.

Fighting in last week's uprising was fiercest in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, where the military bombarded the headquarters of Boko Haram and killed hundreds of suspected followers, along with the sect's leadership.
