Support The Free Speech Protection Act of 2008

When Congress returns next month, the Senate Judiciary Committee may take up the Free Speech Protection Act of 2008 (S. 2977), a bill that protects U.S. authors and publishers from the threat of libel tourism.

The Libel Tourist - Updated Edition explains:

Right NOW the bill is pending in Congress. We have only until the first week of September to get everybody to demand that Congress pass this bill. If we miss this opportunity, all American writers and publishers - except those living in New York State, where Rachel's Law already passed, continue to be silenced.

Write or call your Congresssional representatives to demand their support of the Free Speech Act 2008. Don't wait! The deadline for responding is close of business Friday, September 5.

The numbers of the bill are as follows: H.R. 5814 (House of Representatives) and S-2977 (Senate).

Cassandra,

This is one of the case were I must agree with the ACLU. Is there some kind of petition that we could sign somewhere?

Damien,
I don't know of a petition, but below is a sample letter I found at Jihad Watch:

Dear....

PLEASE SUPPORT THE FREE SPEECH PROTECTION ACT (S-2977 & H.R. 5814),
aka "Rachel's Law"

"Rachel's Law" was introduced to provide legal protections from "libel terrorism" to New York authors and publishers. In a tremendous victory for free speech rights, the bill passed both the Assembly and the Senate and was signed by Governor Patterson on May 1, 2008.

Legislation to protect authors and publishers in all states has now been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (bill number H.R. 5814) and Senate (bill number S-2977). Entitled the "Free Speech Protection Act," introduced by Representatives Peter King (R-NY) and Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Arlen Specter (R-PA).

This bill would protect American journalists from libel suits brought in foreign courts that do not have the same protections for free speech that are found in the U.S. Constitution.

I urge you to support efforts to approve the bill and vote for its passage as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
