Mount Sinai patient tested for Ebola virus

UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) --

Mount Sinai Hospital is performing tests on a patient who had recently traveled to a West African country where Ebola has been reported, the hospital says.

A male patient with high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms came to the hospital's emergency room on Monday morning, officials said.

The hospital says the patient has been placed in strict isolation and is undergoing medical screenings to determine the cause of his symptoms.

"All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff. We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients," the hospital wrote in a statement.

Mt. Sinai is following what the Center for Disease Control recommended last week when they sent a Health Alert to doctors and hospitals.

The New York City Department of Health said, "After consultation with CDC and Mount Sinai, the Health Department has concluded that the patient is unlikely to have Ebola. Specimens are being tested for common causes of illness and to definitively exclude Ebola."

Testing for Ebola is done at the CDC. According to a CDC spokesperson testing for Ebola takes 1-2 days after they receive the samples. The primary testing is PCR. This is performed on blood that has been treated to kill and live virus. So far CDC has tested samples from around 6 people who had symptoms consistent with Ebola and a travel history to the affected region.

ABC News' Dr. Richard Besser cautions, "Many things cause fever and gastrointestinal symptoms. The steps they are taking are wise given the travel history, but nothing about the symptoms is specific to Ebola."

The Ebola virus causes a hemorrhagic fever that has sickened more than 1,300 people in Africa, killing more than 700 mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. It is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood or urine, unlike an airborne virus like influenza or the common cold. A person exposed to the virus can take up to 21 days to exhibit any symptoms, making it possible for infected travelers to enter the U.S. without knowing they have it.

Federal agents at U.S. airports are watching travelers from Africa for flu-like symptoms that could be tied to the recent Ebola outbreak, as delegations from some 50 countries arrive in the nation's capital for a leadership summit this week. Border patrol agents at Washington's Dulles International and New York's JFK airport in particular have been told to ask travelers about possible exposure to the virus and to be on the lookout for anyone with a fever, headache, achiness, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, rash or red eyes.

"There is a screening process that individuals have to go through when they board aircraft departing the countries where this outbreak has been reported. There is additional screening that occurs when individuals who started in that region of the world arrive in this country," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.

If a passenger is suspected of carrying the deadly virus, they would be quarantined immediately and evaluated by medical personnel, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which provided the additional training to local airports.

"There is always the possibility that someone with an infectious disease can enter the United States," CDC spokeswoman Barbara Reynolds said Monday. "The public health concern is whether it would spread, and, if so, how quickly.'"

While the CDC says it is not screening passengers boarding planes at African airports - the job of local authorities there - the center said it has encouraged vulnerable countries to follow certain precautions. Outbound passengers in the countries experiencing Ebola are being screened for fevers and with health questionnaires, Reynolds said.

Health officials say the threat to Americans remains relatively small, even with the uptick in travel this week between Africa and the United States. In the past decade, five people have entered the U.S. known to have a viral hemorrhagic fever, including a case last March of a Minnesota man diagnosed with Lassa Fever after traveling to West Africa.

NBC News has learned that since last week, there have been at least 22 inquiries about suspected Ebola cases in the United States — a sign of the high alert in U.S. hospitals and around the country amid worries about Ebola in West Africa. None of the cases was confirmed.

       

Of the 22 suspected cases reported to government health officials, only four met the requirements for testing, and negative results are in for three of them — two of the patients had malaria and one had influenza. Results had not arrived for the fourth.

The Key To A Lasting Middle East Peace Is Total Victory

Here’s a wacky idea. Let’s win the war against our jihadi enemies.
Yeah, it’s certainly an outside the box idea. All we hear right now – in fact, all we’ve heard for decades – is about peace processes and negotiations and ceasefires. On and on they go, one after another, always crashing on the rocks of intransigence by people who hate our allies and who hate us. Maybe we need some fresh new ideas, some outside-the-box thinking.
How about we and our allies destroy our enemies? After all, the best peace plan is victory.
Wait, hear me out. You know, it wasn’t that long ago that we Americans and our allies won wars. Sure, it’s unfashionable to talk about winning today, but we have much to learn from history. And history teaches that if you pummel your enemies into submission, they tend to submit and stop trying to murder you and your kids.
I’m not necessarily talking about emulating the original Middle East peacemakers, the Romans, who got tired of Carthage’s attitude and leveled the city, killed the men, sold the women and children into bondage and sowed the fields with salt. But then, on the other hand, we haven’t had a lot of problems with the Carthaginians in the last couple millennia.
Let’s look closer to our own time. Ulysses S. Grant famously refused to accept anything except unconditional surrender, and set about grinding his Confederate opponents into dust. General Grant was quite popular around the old Schlichter family place, the rebels having burned down the town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where my family lived.Note that Chambersburg hasn’t been burned down since.
Also note that Grant and his Unions troops faced brave, determined and skilled warriors in the Confederates. Today, we and our allies typically face untrained, gutless losers who cower behind women and children when they aren’t trying to talk them into blowing themselves to bits inside a school bus.
Even Democrats used to embrace the idea of victory. As hard as that is to believe, it was Democrat Harry Truman who decided that, given the choice of either a whole bunch of the enemy dying or a whole bunch of the enemy dying plus a whole bunch of Americans and allies also dying, since the enemy started it they could do the dying alone. He nuked Hiroshima, and when the Japanese didn’t give up, he nuked Nagasaki. And the Japanese gave up.And they haven’t been a problem since.
When our enemies decide to embark on a war, someone’s going to die. I vote that it be them instead of us. Sadly, many of our political leaders and media mavens don’t see it that way. They whine because so few Israelis have died in comparison to Hamas. They seem to think we have some sort of moral obligation to suffer casualties. Perhaps they’d feel differently if they had even been around any.
My great-great grandfather was in the Union Army. I expect he was quite pleased that he didn’t have to go for round two with the rebels. Both of my grandfathers were in the Pacific getting ready to help invade Japan when Harry tossed the hot rocks. There’s a fair chance at least one of yours was too.I’m glad they didn’t have to hit those beaches – an invasion of Japan would have been an unspeakable bloodbath, both for the military and civilians of Japan and, more importantly, for the warriors of the United States and our allies.
Yeah, I place a higher value on the lives of our troops and those of our courageous allies than upon those of our enemies. Call me crazy.
One should ask presumptive President Hillary Clinton about that.A tape from September 10, 2011, just came out with Bill Clinton talking in Australia about how he could have killed Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, but held back because it might cause perhaps 300 civilian casualties. Of course, the next day bin Laden killed 3000 Americans. Was that the right choice, Ms. Clinton?What would you do? Do you think Bill made the right choice in not taking out bin Laden because he bravely surrounded himself with 300 civilians even though it cost us 3000 Americans?
That’s a really good question. And that’s why no one in the mainstream media will ever ask it. Okay, Jake Tapper might, but that’s why he’ll never get within 10 miles of Her Majesty.
War is an ugly and terrible thing. That’s why you should avoid it. But the only thing worse than getting sucked into a war is not winning one. We went into Korea, stopped short of victory, and we’re still there dealing with that freak show dynasty. We refused to achieve victory in Vietnam, and millions died throughout Southeast Asia when the communists proceeded to do what communists always do. We have refused to do what was needed to achieve victory in Afghanistan and that garden spot is already reverting to the Stone Age.
We had victory in Iraq, but squandered it. All that blood spilled for nothing – pathetic. Now the jihadis are sweeping in and conducting a real #waronwomen. Even the most dedicated single payer health care advocate has to recoil from ISIS’s mandatory cliterodectomy program.
Our leaders insist Israel show “restraint” and urge a truce. Except everyone knows that the only chance for peace in the long term is the utter destruction of Hamas. You can’t negotiate peace where the other side’s bottom line bargaining position is that you die.
We need to unequivocally and unreservedly support our allies in their war against our shared enemies.As I discuss in my new book, Conservative Insurgency, a speculative future history of the struggle to restore our system and culture, we need to rebuild our shrunken military and aggressively confront and destroy threats to our nation. We can’t wish away the fact that our enemies want us dead. What we can do is make it clear that if they choose to make war upon us, over or covert, they are the ones who will get to do the dying.

Two jihad attacks, one with a tractor, the other with a gun

There were two terrorist attacks in Jerusalem today. The first one was near the Mount of Olives hotel:

A tractor driven by a Palestinian man rammed into a bus in central Jerusalem early Monday afternoon, close to the “seam” between the western and eastern parts of the city.

A male pedestrian approximately 30 years old was run over by the tractor as it headed toward the bus and was killed. The tractor driver, identified as East Jerusalem resident Muhammed Naif El-Ja’abis, turned the bus over onto its side during the attack, making several efforts to do so before he succeeded. The bus driver as well as five others were lightly hurt.

Police said the attack, which took place at the end of Shmuel Hanavi Street, near the Olive Tree Hotel, was nationalistically motivated.

A police officer and Prisons Service official who realized what was happening ran up to the tractor and fired a volley of shots at the terrorist as he sat in the cab and killed him, Jerusalem police chief Yossi Pariente said.

The tractor driver was identified by Palestinians on social media as Muhammed Naif El-Ja’abis from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber.

Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said the terrorist was known to the authorities from a previous incident, and that his family was being questioned.

Praising the actions of the police, he said, “The quick response saved lives.” Aharonovitch added that officials had considered the possibility that there could be an attack against the background of the ongoing Israeli military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. “We took that into account at the start of the operation down south,” he said.

Security officials told Channel 2 news that Ja’abis may have carried out the attack for revenge after his cousin’s home was demolished two weeks ago.

For his act of murder, that monster deserved to die. And sadly, it wasn't the only jihad attack today. There was another at Mount Scopus:

According to a report on Channel 2, an Israeli was shot in the stomach at the entrance to the Har Hatzofim (Mount Scopus) tunnel in Jerusalem.

An eyewitness named Eti said that the victim is a soldier. "I saw him falling backward," she told reporter Moshe Nusbaum.

The wounded man is about 20, said the channel's reporters, and he is in moderate to serious condition and received treatment on the spot. He was then taken to the nearby Hadassah Har Hatzofim hospital.

Eyewitnesses said that he was shot by a man who then got on a motorcycle or scooter and then drove off toward the Arab neighborhood of Wadi Joz. There may have been another man on the scooter as well.

Police are conducting a manhunt assisted by helicopters.

While the background for the attack is not known, initial estimates are that it is nationalistically motivated.

Major General Yosi Parienti, Jerusalem District Police Commander, said that the shooter was dressed in black and that he fired several shots at the soldier from close range. The man then ran toward a Vespa type scooter and drove off. A security guard fired at the scooter but apparently missed it.

"There is a very high likelihood that this is a terror attack,” said Parienti. The soldier apparently has no criminal background and a criminal motivation appears unlikely.

Exactly. From the latest updates, there's a manhunt going on for the motocyclist who committed this second vile act. I hope they catch him, along with any accomplice he may have had.

With all those visitors from Africa taking in the local tourist attractions, who wants to take the chance on contracting Ebola, this outbreak very possibly being a mutated form of the deadly virus?   Frankly, I, for one, do not trust any assurances from this administration.

Furthermore, this week's traffic in D.C. will be one gigantic snarl.  Even the foot traffic will be unbearable.
