NYDailyNews: Police in Europe seek boost in firepower to respond against terrorists
Targeted and outgunned by homegrown terrorists, cops throughout Europe are demanding a serious boost in firepower.French police unions met Monday with top officials from the Interior Ministry, pressing for heavy weapons and protective gear, better training for first responders, and more legal tools to guard against terrorism.
“We were not prepared in terms of equipment or mindset for this kind of operation,” Michel Thooris, leader of the Action Police CFTC union, told The Associated Press. Philippe Capon, head of the UNSA French police union, agreed, noting that most municipal police in France do not carry guns.
Unarmed rookie Officer Clarissa Jean-Philippe, 27, was gunned down in a Paris suburb a day after the Charlie Hebdo attack by a terrorist wielding an automatic weapon and wearing a bulletproof vest.
