Victim has 'significant' eye injuries from attack that bystanders stopped -- the city is now braced for protests

A Sudanese man arrested over a knife attack in Belfast on Monday is understood to have been granted leave to remain in Northern Ireland, the police have said.

The man, initially believed by police to be Somali but later confirmed as Sudanese, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were called to Kinnaird Avenue at about 10.30pm on Monday.

Video of the attack appeared to show a man with a knife holding another man down on the ground, before bystanders intervened. One of them hit the attacker over the head with a hurling stick. The victim, who is in his forties, had "significant" eye injuries, Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said.
