CLAIM: Iran creates its own high speed stealth missile

NICOSIA -- Iran has unveiled what officials termed a missile that could evade radar.

The Defense Ministry has overseen the development of the Qiam-1, described as containing a unique shape. The surface-to-surface high-velocity missile was designed to be fired from a range of launchers.

"One of the most important features of the Qiam missile is that it has no tail fins, wings and canards, and this has granted it greater velocity," Mehdi Farahi, director of the ministry's Aerospace Industries Organization, said.

The short-range cruise missile was test-fired in mid-2010, officials said.

They said the development project was shorter than expected.

Farahi, in remarks to the official Fars News Agency, said the liquid-fuel Qiam could be deployed in a range of missions. The general said the new class missile could strike numerous targets at varying distances.

"The missile has new technical aspects and a unique tactical capacity," Defense Minister Ahmed Vahidi said. "Since the surface-to-surface missile has no wings, it has lot of tactical power, which also reduces the chances of it being intercepted. This missile is capable of hitting its target with high precision."

Officials said Qiam was indigenously developed and produced in Iran. They did not disclose a production schedule.

Qiam-1 was said to contain an advanced navigation system. Officials said the system would help ensure that the projectile could evade missile defense systems.

NOT ONLY THAT...
