This happens in my city. Men dance for hours, cut themselves on the forehead, whip themselves.
For the child, it would have been an honor to walk around with spears and arrows taped to his body, and he would have taken a cut to the forehead like a little man. The arrows, represent the manner in which the Caliph's son died while in the father's arms.
Not saying it is good to purposefully inflict wounds. Just providing context.
