ISIS captures 88 Eritrean Christians in Libya, US official confirms
The ISIS terror group kidnapped 88 Eritrean Christians from a people-smugglers' caravan in Libya last week, a U.S. defense official confirmed Monday.
The defense official confirmed initial reports of the mass kidnapping to Fox News after seeing a recent intelligence report. The independent Libya Herald newspaper reported that the convoy was ambushed by militants south of Tripoli before dawn this past Wednesday morning.
Meron Estafanos, the co-founder of the Stockholm-based International Commission on Eritrean Refugees, told the paper that the group of migrants included "about 12 Eritrean Muslims and some Egyptians. They put them in another truck and they put 12 Eritrean women Christians in a smaller pick-up".
Estafanos said that the militants had initially stopped the truck and demanded that the Muslims on board make themselves known. Everyone who responded was asked about the Koran and their religious observance in an attempt to catch Christians pretending to be Muslims.
The main body of the group was put back on the original truck. As the militants drove the vehicle away, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported that at least nine men attempted to escape by diving off the back of the truck. Estefanos said three of those who had escaped were safe, but still trying to get out of Libya. The fate of the others was not known.
Libya has become a jumping-off point for thousands of migrants from the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa who attempt the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to southern Europe. However, Libya's ongoing instability has led to an increased presence by ISIS and other terror groups, increasing the risk for Christians and other non-Muslims attempting the crossing.
"Ever since the kidnapping by ISIS in Libya last February," she said, "many are taking different routes. Some go from Khartoum [Sudan] to Turkey, then Greece. Others are now leaving via Khartoum to Cairo, then Alexandria and from there by boat to Italy. I think we will see an increase towards Turkey and Cairo instead of Libya".
ISIS on Tuesday also claimed that it seized a power plant near the Libyan city of Sirte, which supplies central and western parts of the country with electricity, Reuters reports.
"The plant ... was taken," ISIS said in a message on social media, while forces loyal to the self-declared government that controls Libya's capital, Tripoli, fled the area, a military source told Reuters. The source said three soldiers were killed in the attack.
Libya is divided between rival governments and hundreds of militias in the aftermath of its 2011 civil war that ousted dictator Muammar Qaddafi.
The violence has impacted the country's oil revenues heavily. U.N. envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon has warned that the country only has enough money to pay salaries for another six weeks, urging warring parties to agree on a unity government. Negotiators are currently meeting in Morocco to discuss a power-sharing agreement.

Ideally, I would prefer to see Eritrean Refugees, Christian or not, shot as soon as they set foot on European soil.
But perhaps this works out even better.
Hey RT, what do you think of the Waco Biker shooting? Have any opinions?
I haven't really given it much thought.
What I've read here recently has certainly swayed me a little away from my initial opinion.
My first reaction to police shooting criminal members of my racial group was to go out and do some lootin' and burnin' in my own neighborhood.
I can see where you and some others would have problems with the mass arrest and high bail.
Personally, I'm a little more pro suspension of Habeas corpus than most. As long as its not me on the butt end of it.
What if this was a cribs & Bloods shootout in a LA theater? Or a Sunni / Shia throwdown at a Dearborn Mosque?
Would I have a problem with throwing everyone there in jail and high bail? ...... probably not.
I didn't see any problem with interning Japanese Americans during the war either.
Man, I'm just so convinced that constitutional restraints will be the key to our ultimate demise, that in this case I'm OK with an abuse of power.
I got nothing against bikers in general. In fact I think its a biker gang mentality that will be key to our salvation once the nation descends into open conflict between armed ethnic enclaves. When that comes down I'm gonna be wanting some freedom loving Bikers in my trench.
But I think its unrealistic to expect our law enforcement agencies to protect us from those that dont fight within the rules while expecting them to stay within the rules in our defense. Just as our soldiers cant win fighting within their ruleset handicaps.
So ..... dont know if I really answered your question .... but I'm not losing any sleep over a bunch of bikers cooling their heels.
In fact I'd be OK if there were some federal land set aside to let Biker Gangs settle their differences without governmental interference.
Right now I'm not so sure that in jail is the safest place for a Cossack to be.
Right now I'm not so sure that being in jail is the not safest place for a Cossack to be.
Damn ... I fucked that up again.
I'm sure you get my point.
RT,
I believe you are the most blunt/honest person I have ever encountered.
I get your not reticence to support the bikers in this case. YOu pose the question, what would I think if the cops did the same thing with regard to a shoot out between the Crips and the Bloods? Well, thing is, I would oppose cops firing into a crowd of people standing in front of a restaurant if it was Crips and Bloods, or even ISIS.
The cops fired directly at a restaurant full of people with only people standing in front of the restaurant and the windows and walls themselves to stop the bullet.
If you read some of the posts i have posted here, you will see they were using VERY HEAVY ARTILLERY, WITH ARMOR-PIERCING ROUNDS.
That ONLY 9 people are dead and ONLY 27 people are wounded is a fucking miracle.
Additionally, I am not so concerned about the bikers themselves as I am about
1) the Law itself
and
2) the fact that many of those arrested were not criminals, but instead just average dudes who liked to be part of a Motorcycle Club and play out their Hells Angels/Sons of Anarchy fantasies.
it is not against the law to want to play cowboys and indians even if you are an adult.
Do you get what I'm saying?
I see exactly where your coming from.
And I'm not as pro-cop as I may come off sounding.
I've never particularly liked cops ...... in fact, dont tell anyone, but I cheered when the Branch Dividians taught the cops invading their compound that they didn't have a monopoly on the use of firepower.
My personal experience with bikers is that they're usually pretty good folks when their alone, but like cops, or Muslims, seem to develop god complexes when surrounded by their Gang.
I can only speculate about the level of involvement in organized criminal activity of the individuals currently in custody .... but I'm sure at least some of them knew the risk of wearing the colors.
I may be talking out my ass here because I'm not inclined to research the subject before I post this comment, but I can think of several times in our history (Prohibition Gangsters, Outlaw West, Indian Wars, etc) where had the authorities of the day been forced to follow constitutional law to the letter the outcomes would have been much worse on the American society as a whole.
I think there are times and situations where we should not punish over-zealous authoritative responses. I think we used to be able to set constitutional law aside when we needed to, but in today's overly litigious environment its almost impossible. And I think its going to bite our Republic in the ass one day.
I do think the cops were the most aggressive and well armed gang at Twin Peaks that day. I think they were trigger happy by today's standards ...... its today's standards I have a problem with more than the cops.
RT it may surprise you to find out I agree with you on both your Branch Davidian comment and biker comment in your comment above. Pastorius and I have had extensive conversations on both offline (the Branch Davidians a few years ago when Nappy was up to something stupid).
However, I do agree with Pasto on this, both in the cops overreacting (the way but not extent they did in Waco before) and that it is beyond high time to start preferring charges or turning folks loose.
Holding them for a couple or three days, while not ideal, is understandable as they sorted out who's who and what's what. But the majority of those that are innocent and now cooling their heels 3 weeks later and incurring damage in lost wages, reputations at work (even if innocent the stigma will still stick) etc for not much better reason it seems than cops and attorneys covering their own asses.
Yes, exactly. At this point, I think this is all about the cops covering their own asses.
This is not about keeping killers off the streets, IMO.
In general, I agree with you too, RT.
In fact, in general, I think the American population does not like, trust, or believe bikers. That is why this is not big news. No one fucking cares.
AND, that is exactly why the cops and the Justice of the Peace and the District Attorney could just let these guys out and nothing would happen.
This is a Nixonian situation at this point, The more they try to cover it up, the worse it is going to get for them.
This has been going on for almost 3 1/2 weeks now.
If they would have let the guys out a week or so back, it all would have blown over, I think. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's what I think.
That being said, I think they should have let them all out in 48 hours, as per the law. These guys are NOT GUILTY OF CONSPIRACY TO MURDER.
That's total bullshit.
That doesn't surprise me at all MR, I've always detected a Redneck streak in you.
.... as far as the heavy artillery goes, I'm not in the crowd that's worried about domestic law agencies having access to military grade hardware and ammo.
.... I try to imagine being a cop assigned to keeping a couple hundred bikers under control. I wouldn't want to try that with a service revolver.
I'd have no problem with car chases being resolved with hellfires, or giving the Border patrol bonuses for sniping anything swimming across the river.
I was fairly impressed when the Philly cops dropped sachels into MOVE's HQ.
If cops were to really get out of control I trust the citizenship to cull the bad ones out extra-judicially.
