The Rolling Stones, Live on The Old Grey Whistle Test

As the years have gone by, I have become more and more convinced that it is not the Beatles who deserves the title, "Greatest Rock n' Roll Band of All Time."

It is the Stones.

Personally, I prefer Zeppelin. But I am cognizant of the fact that the Stones have had a far greater cultural impact.

I'll stick with The Beatles: More versatile, better musicians. The best of the mid-sixties Stones, chronicled in their "Hot Rocks" collections, is most formidable but their attempt to "grow" musically late in the decade was an embarrassing failure.

Good for them that they came to grips with their shortcomings, fired Brain, brought on Mick Taylor and - seemingly overnight - became top notch concert performers. Word is that they were much humiliated after seeing The Who perform and realized they weren't measuring up.

After a brief but exiting comeback: Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street; they settled into a groove which, aside from the occasional killer riff (how did Keith do it?), they have played it safe and predicable. For the most part a long, bland wind down.

A great band, cultural icons no doubt, but I don't believe they topped the Lads.

Great comment. The Beatles obviously were great. But a lot of their music does not stand the test of time for me. A lot of their music is exceedingly silly.

On the other hand, some of it was so surreal and amazing, it deserves to be remembered as real art.

A Day In The Life
Strawberry Fields Forever
Happiness Is a Warm Gun

And then there are George Harrison's amazing contributions

Something
While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

McCartney's

Let It Be
Long and Winding Road
Yesterday

All of these are far more expansive and imaginative than anything the Stones ever did.

But what the Stones did is discover a groove all their own, which exists as it's own form; besides the Blues.

And in doing so, they wrote many great songs, with great hooks and grooves that stand the test of time and have become staples of our culture:

Start Me Up
Jumpin Jack Flash
Satisfaction
Brown Sugar
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Harlem Shuffle
It's Only Rock n' Roll
Waiting On A Friend
Angie
Wild Horses

These aren't just great songs, by stellar songwriters.

They are Stones songs, which require the Stones form to do the songs.

You do not hear great covers of great Stones songs, unless they are done in a Country or Americana Folk style, because they require a kind of organic authenticity that is not required of the best Beatles songs.

But hey, I know I am in the minority on this.

I could very well be wrong.

If I am, I am convinced that time will PROVE it.

OT:

Holy $^!T!...Trump actually spelled out "We will soon have destroyed 100% of the Caliphate".....Now he's talking!

I inherited a total mess in Syria and Afghanistan, the “Endless Wars” of unlimited spending and death. During my campaign I said, very strongly, that these wars must finally end. We spend $50 Billion a year in Afghanistan and have hit them so hard that we are now talking peace...

....after 18 long years. Syria was loaded with ISIS until I came along. We will soon have destroyed 100% of the Caliphate, but will be watching them closely. It is now time to start coming home and, after many years, spending our money wisely. Certain people must get smart!
