German authorities are investigating ‘a possible deliberate act’ as search for source of E. coli outbreak continues

An outbreak of killer E. coli that has spread to 12 countries and killed 19 people may be linked to a Hamburg festival in May and could have claimed a 20th victim, reports said on Saturday.

German weekly newspaper Focus said authorities were looking closely at a harbour festival that took place in Hamburg on May 6-8 and that drew 1.5 million visitors from Germany and abroad.

The newspaper noted that the first reported case of E. coli infection followed just a week later in the city’s university hospital.

Germany’s national disease institute The Robert-Koch Institute, however, said there did not appear to be a connection. “Press information regarding a link between the E. coli infections and large gatherings does not correspond with the institute’s knowledge,” German news agency DPA quoted it as saying.

Local media also said Saturday a man in his 50s who died in Brandenberg may be the 20th victim in Europe but the cause of death was uncertain because he had several other infections as well as E. coli.

The latest confirmed death was of an 80-year-old woman in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Friday.

The European Commission on Saturday said it was preparing to send a team of experts to Germany to help speed up efforts to locate the source of the outbreak, a statement said.

So far, scientific tests have failed to support a link to the epidemic, the European Union’s Reference Laboratory for E. coli in Rome has said.

Faced with the mystery, German reports said police were investigating a possible deliberate act and were also checking two restaurants in the northern town of Lubeck, one in which 17 diners fell ill and another in which eight women were affected, one of whom died.

The warning from the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure [CPNI], which operates as part of the Security Service, comes as experts warned the deadly E.coli outbreak in Germany has highlighted the vulnerability of the food chain and how quickly bacteria can spread.

The highly virulent strain has claimed 18 lives and left more than 1,800 seriously ill, with the true number of cases expected to be far higher.

A senior German doctor last night called for an investigation into the possibility that the bacteria had been spread deliberately.

Klaus-Dieter Zastrow, chief doctor for hygiene at Berlin’s Vivantes hospital, said:

“It’s quite possible that there’s a crazy person out there who thinks 'I’ll kill a few people or give 10,000 people diarrhoea’. It’s a negligent mistake not to investigate in that direction.”

 

Putting 2 and 2 together

In another followup to the post about Superman's renouncing US citizenship and even the now canceled story depicting Americans as hostile to Islam, I just thought of a little something else: as DC's publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, the former who's certainly a bad lot himself, said at one point, the story about the Man of Steel forfeiting American citizenship was supposed to be a lead-in to another one.

However, as The Blaze reported a couple days after the controversy sparked by the citizenship case, they were reconsidering their plans. Since Comics Alliance's own staffers clearly don't want to speculate - and a lot of the more rabidly leftist sites never seemed to follow up on the news Glenn Beck's sites provided, probably out of anti-conservative hatred for him and because they didn't want their readers to know about it - that's why I'll have to do that particular job and provide a possible theory for why the Sharif story was scrapped.

My guess is that the Sharif story could very easily be what DiDio and Lee for some were alluding to at the time of the Superman citizenship controversy. If it was, then this could've been an even graver case than we think: for all we know, it could've depicted the Big Blue Boy Scout feeling disillusioned with America for alleged racism, since the writers and editors likely wouldn't have had the courage to describe it as anti-religious sentiment, nor would they have had the courage to include any verses from the Koran for people to form an opinion on.

Obviously, we'll probably never know the exact details of what went on behind the scenes at DC Comics in the past several months. But if this theory does turn out to be correct, that's why the replacement of Paul Roberson's story is for the best. Not that we can ever expect most of the apologists to ever ponder that.

Teens in a mob assault and rob Center City patrons

The two young women were sitting at a window table inside the Max Brenner restaurant on 15th Street, near Walnut, sharing chocolate fondue after some shopping.

The streets were vibrant. The weather was nice.

"The city had a good vibe," remembered one of the women, Maria, who requested her full name not be printed.

But their night on the town was about to become frightening.

Heading their way was a pack of teens roving through Center City after leaving a North Philadelphia music festival.

They were part of about 100 or more young people who had left Saturday night's event, police said, committing a series of violent assaults and robberies, including one against Maria, 25, of North Philadelphia, and her cousin Cecilia, 29, of Havertown.

Donta Holdclaw was in the crowd of teens that night. On Tuesday afternoon, he stood on the front step of his mother's North Philadelphia apartment and said the group was bound for South Street.

"They were holding fireworks," he said. "That's what we were going to see."

He had gone to the Susquehanna Community Festival, along Susquehanna Avenue near Broad Street, with his older brother, Aleek Hamilton, 19. Last week, Hamilton graduated from Mastbaum Vocational/Technical High School, with plans to attend college and become a mechanic, said his mother, Letitia Washington.

Hamilton is now in jail, charged with robbing Cecilia.

Erica Rockymore, 18, of North Philadelphia, was also among the teens, police said. Last week, she graduated from the Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter High School, her family said. Her 14-year-old sister asked her to take her to the festival. Rockymore is in jail, too, charged with assaulting Maria.

Maria and Cecilia were enjoying their dessert at Max Brenner, with its large, open bay doors. Afterward, Maria, an interior and industrial designer, had planned to visit a Northern Liberties art exhibit. Cecilia was heading home.

The women had spent the afternoon dress shopping. Maria is getting married soon.

About 10 p.m., Maria said, she saw a shirtless teenager run past the restaurant.

"He was running in the middle of the street and looked like he was running away from someone," she said.

Maria tucked away her phone and wallet, which had been sitting on the table.

She grew up in Brazil, she said, and was more street-smart than her cousin.

Before she could tell Cecilia to put her cell phone away, another teen reached through the window and snatched it.

Maria ran out after him.

She was on the sidewalk, starting to scream "thief," she said, when someone from behind punched her in the jaw.

She said she turned, jaw throbbing, to see the girl who had hit her standing with five other teens. "What are you going to do?" she said the girl who had punched her yelled.

The teens were laughing, she said. "They were fearless. It seemed like they weren't taking anything serious."

Maria ran into another restaurant and called 911.

The girls in the group called her a slut as they left, she said.

The police arrived quickly. Another customer at Max Brenner, a 32-year-old woman from Delaware who was with her 7-year-old daughter, had also been robbed. Someone had reached in through a window and snatched her phone, according to police reports.

"Would you be able to identify them if we find them?" an officer asked Maria, referring to the teens.

Yes, she said.

The three women and the young girl got in the back of a police cruiser.

At 11th and South Streets, they saw the pack. The teens didn't run. "They were laughing," Maria said, "like nothing was happening."

Maria identified Hamilton and Rockymore for police. One of the teens had already sent a text from Cecilia's phone, she said. "Hangin in the da hood," it read.

Terrance Howard, 20, of Frankford, was arrested after being found to have the Delaware woman's phone, police said.

Police are still investigating two other attacks by teens leaving the festival, including one that left a woman hospitalized with a broken leg.

Officials rejected characterizing Saturday's attacks as "flash mob" assaults, because, they said, they had not been coordinated through social media. Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey promised the department would pursue stiff penalties for similar teen violence.

"If they get caught and they get charged, they're going to have a problem," Ramsey said.

Paul Levy, president of the Center City District, called for a zero-tolerance approach.

Maria said Tuesday that her jaw was still sore. She and her fiance had planned to start a family in Philadelphia. She said she still might.

She was more surprised, she said, than frightened.

"I didn't expect something like that in Center City."

Iran secretly tested 'nuclear-capable missiles'

LONDON — Iran has carried out secret tests of ballistic missiles capable of delivering a nuclear payload in breach of UN resolutions, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Wednesday.

Hague's comments came a day after Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said they had fired 14 missiles in an exercise, one of them a medium-range weapon capable of striking Israel or US targets in the Gulf.

In a statement to lawmakers, Hague said: "Iran has also been carrying out covert ballistic missile tests and rocket launches, including testing missiles capable of delivering a nuclear payload in contravention of UN resolution 1929."

He said Iran had also announced plans to triple its capacity to produce 20 percent enriched uranium, adding: "These are enrichment levels far greater than is needed for peaceful nuclear energy.

"We will maintain and continue to increase pressure on Iran to negotiate an agreement on their nuclear programme," including sanctions, he said.

There was no immediate reaction from Tehran, which denies Western claims that it is pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civil atomic programme.

On Tuesday Iranian state media said the Revolutionary Guards fired nine Zelzal missiles, two Shahab-1s, two Shahab-2s and a single medium-range Ghadr on the second day of their Great Prophet-6 exercise.

On the first day of the exercise on Monday, the Guards unveiled an "underground missile silo" which they said was designed for launching their medium-range missiles, state television reported.

The Guards' aerospace commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh insisted Iran's missile programme posed no threat to European nations but was intended to provide defence against "US targets in the region and the Zionist regime."

Iran has said that its latest exercise is not aimed at any country but carries "a message of peace and friendship."

On Tuesday US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Iran was "bragging" about its assets, but did not specify whether Washington thought the tested missiles were nuclear-capable.

Iran's missile programme, which is under the control of the powerful Guards along with its space projects, has been a mounting source of concern in the West.

Western governments fear Tehran is seeking to develop a ballistic capability to enable it to launch atomic warheads under cover of its civil nuclear programme.

Hague meanwhile reiterated accusations that Iran was backing the violent suppression of pro-democracy protests in neighbouring Syria.

Earlier this month the British envoy in Tehran was summoned to the foreign ministry over the claims.

"Iran continues to connive in the suppression of legitimate protest in Syria and to suppress protests at home," Hague said.

Weimar Conditions Returning to Germany

In the Weimar Republic, the name given to the political order that prevailed in Germany during the interwar period prior to Hitler's assumption of power, political violence became routine. Along with hyperinflation, this was one of the key destabilising factors that created the impression in the popular mind of the country's descent into chaos. In response, people sought the firm re-establishment of order, with consequences that we now know to be disastrous.

It seems that similar conditions are developing in present day Germany. Leftist/Muslim (it becomes increasingly hard to distinguish the two) violence against those who dissent from politically correct thinking is no longer exceptional. It has become an almost daily occurrence.

Last weekend in Germany, four of the far-right (and this one actually is far right) NPD party's 10 candidates for the upcoming Berlin elections were beaten up by and robbed by masked attackers. Ironically, among the items stolen from one candidate was a book called "Antifa heisst Angriff" (Antifa Means Attack).

On the Friday before the weekend, a group of citizens in Mönchengladbach had gathered to picket an illegal mosque that had been established in Eichen. As the Mohammedans emerged from their Friday prayers, they first remonstrated with the demonstrators verbally then attacked them physically.

A few weeks ago, a leftist/Muslim mob attacked the Counterjihad event attended by Robert Spencer in Stuttgart. Many of the planned activities had to be called off as the police proved unable or unwilling to deal with the violence. A small pro-Israel demonstration had to be called off in the same city due to threats. Only days ago a similar mob, almost certainly involving many of the same people, invaded a construction site where a railway station is due to be built and attacked the police when challenged. One policeman was repeatedly struck while lying on the ground. He was badly injured.

Strasbourg Counterjihad Event Cancelled

And it's not just Germany where Weimar conditions are returning. France, too, was racked by political violence in the interwar years. And it's flourishing there again now.

In a capitulation to Islamic supremacists and violent radical Leftists, French and European Union authorities have canceled a free speech rally planned by a coalition of American and European human rights organizations in Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament.

The human rights organizations Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) and Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) were planning to hold their first-ever transatlantic summit in Strasbourg, France, on July 2.

The SIOA/SIOE summit was dedicated to the defense of the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law – all principles denied by Islamic law.

SIOA Executive Director Pamela Geller said in a statement: “The Strasbourg police could not guarantee our safety. When the thugs of the Antifa group and Islamic supremacist organizations announced plans to hold a violent counter-demonstration and to do everything they could to disrupt our activities, the authorities canceled permission for our demonstration and conference, instead of standing up to these violent neo-fascists and their Islamic supremacist allies.”

Strasbourg authorities told SIOA and SIOE organizers that they could not guaranteee their safety at the conference and demonstration location, the Place de la Republique. Efforts were made to hold the demonstration nearby, but the authorities still considered security to be too much of an issue.

N Korea Vows Military Measures against S Korea

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea's military vowed Wednesday to retaliate for anti-Pyongyang signs posted at front-line South Korean army units, as rare talks between the rivals on a stalled joint tourism project broke down.

North Korea has also been releasing a large amount of water from a dam southward without prior notice since Monday night, Seoul officials said. A similar move caused a surge that killed six South Koreans in 2009.

The North's Korean People's Army issued its military warning via state media, promising "merciless military retaliatory measures" until South Korea apologizes and removes signs that it says "seriously hurt the dignity of the leadership" of North Korea.

The "hideous provocation" was "perpetrated only by hooligans who go wild like 'puppies knowing no fear of a tiger,'" an unidentified spokesman for the KPA's Supreme Command said.

Earlier Wednesday, an unidentified North Korean government spokesman warned of a "sacred war" against South Korea over the signs.

The threats follow a report Tuesday by South Korea's Hankyoreh newspaper that some South Korean army units near the border had set up anti-North Korea slogans in the wake of two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea last year.

The newspaper carried a photo showing a banner reading "Let's ram guns and swords into the chests of North Korean puppet soldiers!" hanging over the entrance of one army unit in Cheolwon, a town near the central portion of the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.

The newspaper said the unit also wrote on its walls such signs as "Let's hack the three Kims into pieces," a reference to late North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, his son and current leader Kim Jong Il, and grandson and heir-apparent Kim Jong Un.

South Korea's Defense Ministry confirmed the substance of the report, saying some army units have taken such measures to bolster their soldiers' mental toughness against North Korea.

North Korea's threats to attack South Korea are the latest in a series of warnings and hostile statements from Pyongyang aimed at the conservative government of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

They came as the two Koreas met at North Korea's scenic Diamond Mountain on Wednesday for talks on the North's seizure of South Korean assets there. However, the sides didn't have substantial discussions on the matter because of procedural differences and didn't set dates for any future meetings, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

Joint tours to the mountain were suspended in 2008 following the shooting death of a South Korean tourist. North Korea later confiscated or shut down South Korean-owned buildings and other facilities there.

South Korea's Land Ministry said a North Korean dam has been releasing about 1,000 tons of water per second over the past three days into a river flowing to South Korea. The release hasn't caused any damage in South Korea, it said.

The Unification Ministry said the North didn't inform South Korea of the water release.

In September 2009, the North discharged a large amount of water into the Imjin River, killing six people.

The two Koreas are technically still at war because their 1950s conflict ended with a cease-fire, not a peace treaty.

Their animosity has deepened since North Korea allegedly torpedoed a South Korean warship in March last year. The North also shelled a South Korean border island in November. A total of 50 South Koreans were killed.

Tension spiked again last month when North Korea threatened to attack because of South Korean troops' use of photos of the three Kims as targets during firing drills. South Korea's Defense Ministry later told military units to stop using such photo targets, but it has no immediate plans to ask troops to stop using anti-North Korean signs, a ministry official said.

Senators level new criticism at Pakistan for sheltering terrorists

U.S. senators didn't miss a chance Tuesday to voice frustration with Pakistan over how it takes billions of dollars of American aid while providing safe havens to terrorists to build bombs and launch cross-border attacks on U.S.troops in Afghanistan.

"Well, something's got to give, something's got to change," Sen. Carl Levin, D-Michigan, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said at a hearing. "Because it just can't continue this way, for them to expect that we're going to have a normal relationship with them -- which we all hope for."

And Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, also was critical of Pakistan; specifically, whether the top Taliban leader and al Qaeda ally Mullah Omar was hiding there.

"Is Mullah Omar in Pakistan?" Graham asked Vice Adm.William McRaven, who supervised the raid on the Osama bin Laden compound In Pakistan that ended with the death of al Qaeda leader.

"Sir, we believe he is," McRaven replied.

The hearing was the next step toward Senate approval of President Barack Obama's decision to promote McRaven to become commander of the U.S. Special Forces Command.

Graham nudged McRaven along. "Do we believe he is there is with the knowledge of the ISI (Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate) and the upper echelon of the (Pakistani) army?" asked Graham.

"Sir, I believe the Pakistanis know he is in Pakistan," McRaven said.

Obama cabinet secretary Lisa Jackson heading EPA Gives Millions In Foreign Handouts

The Obama cabinet secretary who launched a costly program to make America’s minority communities green has sent millions of taxpayer dollars to environmental causes overseas, including China, Russia and India. Ranking members of a congressional energy committee call it “foreign handouts” amid record deficits, soaring unemployment and a looming debt ceiling in the U.S.  

The money—$27 million since 2009—has been issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is headed by Lisa Jackson. The cash was issued via 65 foreign grants that don’t even include Canada and Mexico, according to a report issued this week by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. 

Among the enraging foreign handouts are $1.2 million for the United Nations to promote clean fuels, $718,000 to help China comply with two initiatives and $700,000 for Thailand to recover methane gas at pig farms. 

An additional $150,000 went to help the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) combat fraud in carbon trading and $15,000 to Indonesia’s “Breathe Easy, Jakarta” publicity campaign.

This sort of federal spending does not reflect the priorities of the American people, according to a letter that several lawmakers sent Jackson in the report’s aftermath. 

Since being appointed EPA Administrator, Jackson has gone on a manic spending spree to bring “environmental justice” to low-income and minority communities. Under the program, dozens of leftwing groups have received millions of taxpayer dollars to help poor and indigenous people increase recycling, reduce carbon emissions through “weatherization,” participate in “green jobs” training and avoid heat stroke.

The EPA's budget has also surged 34% since Jackson took over to a whopping $10.3 billion. The figure includes $43 million for efforts to reduce greenhouse gases that the agency claims “endanger” public health. Nearly half of the EPA’s budget goes to grants that fund state environmental programs, nonprofits and educational institutions that help promote the agency’s agenda.
