Some looking to defend the indefensible would probably wish to bring up the melting pot or salad bowl metaphors to justify the continual enrichment, yet it only takes but a single tainted ingredient or rotten vegetable (as well as bad hygiene) to completely ruin either and give everyone food poisoning (amongst other things..).
