Al Qaida operatives tailing Americans in Yemen
GERTZ>>CAIRO — Americans have been tracked by suspected insurgents in Yemen.U.S. diplomatic sources said Al Qaida-aligned operatives have been following Americans and employees of U.S. diplomatic missions. The U.S. Embassy has not identified the insurgents, but has informed Yemeni authorities.
On Dec. 5, an unidentified gunman sought to force his way through the U.S. Embassy's front gate. He was stopped by embassy security and the two sides exchanged gunfire. The assailant was shot and arrested.Hours later, the embassy was closed and staffers were ordered to stay home. The facility was reopened on Dec. 6.
"The Americans in Yemen are no different from other Westerners," a U.S. diplomatic source said. "This is a very fluid situation, and Al Qaida has a significant presence here."
On Nov. 18, the U.S. Embassy reported that a Yemeni man had been following foreign women to their homes. The embassy the followed stalker's car and obtained its license number.
The U.S. Embassy and the rest of the American community in Yemen have been on alert for an Al Qaida-aligned attack. The Yemeni Interior Ministry has been slow in heightening security for Westerners, particularly outside of Sanaa.
