Is it their careers? Paycheck this week? Worry over the future of THEIR personal family?
Does it matter?

In another life he could have just been some NEBBISH.
And THAT is the lesson for today.

He had no moral accountability because he surrendered all his moral authority to the state.
He was no longer a human being. He was merely a cog.
This is the same decision people make when they surrender their 2nd Amendment Rights to the State.
They are no longer responsible/accountable for their own safety or moral agency. They are not responsible to maintain their own Freedoms. They are merely components of a machine to be maintained by the state.
In the US, government officials and members of the military take an oath to the Constitution, and yet allow the government to tell them what the oath means. This opens up another pathway to the same effect: I was told that what I was doing was legal as determined by the courts, and so my superiors tell me to carry out their legal order.
This stands the very idea of taking an oath to keep the government aligned with the Constitution on it head.
